Although they do run the risk of pushing it too far and becoming boring before the album even comes out.

Well, I just did some research:

Mellon Collie was recorded from March till August of 1995, with mixing and everything done by the end of that 5 month period.

The album was released TWO MONTHS LATER on October 24, 1995.

See everyone, a January release is hardly impossible.

it was the rumoured date for harry potter, ha! someone has to release sumthin on that date... surely?

Because I'm not biased to the point I'll say anything Billy Corgan ever does is great?

Mellon Collie is my favourite album of all time. Siamese Dream, Adore and Gish are all up there too. As is the Aeroplane Flies High boxset and Pisces Iscariot. The music on all these recordings oozes quality and creativity.

But then Machina for me was a let-down. Fuzzy production was the biggest downside. But even looking past that I don't think the songs are as well constructed as previous Pumpkins work.

With Zwan and TFE I accept they are different bands and different styles of music. To me they seem fairly average, but not at all bad.

SP are still one of my favourite bands and whilst I hope for the next album to be great (and I don't discount it happening), I have to allow for it being another Machina.

Don't worry I agree with you epitome, although I'm pretty biased towards everything Corgan does being good, I still think that TFE was pretty damn medicre, I loved Zwans album, but many of their other songs, especially acoustic, were poor (regardless of whether it was Djali Zwan or not). Machina also is a very odd album as although the songs are good the way they are produced does not do them justice and so I can easily see how you can say after Adore Corgan went downhill, although when I listen to machina II I like some of those songs very much, although unfinished I find it superior to MACHINA.
