Popularity of the new SP 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Do you think that SP will regain the popularity it once had in the 90s?

haha, thats a scary question man, theres alot of people who still like them, i guess it will give them something to rekindle the fanatic in them, but i dont think theres anyway theyre gonna be as popluar as the boy bands of today, you know who im talking about

theyll be popular enough though, cause everyone likes some prog rock, with drums solos and video game-esque guitar solos, enough for a world tour at least

I don't know. I don't think they're doing this for sales or new fans or anything like that. They're mostly doing this for themselves, and if they can be happy with just playing what they want to play and making at least we most devoted of fans happy, then that's fine.

Although, it'd be nice if all these stupid trendy bastards got some sense knocked into them and abandoned the current emo trend.

I think it depends all on this next album and how successful it will be but I don't expect that too many people will be willing to let go of their precious Panic! At The Discos and Simple Plans to become diehard Pumpkin fans.
But I do think the Pumpkins will get their share of attention.

Re: Popularity of the new SP 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Hopefully. I think it all depends on the hype they get from the media. I've seen a couple articles here and there, but nothing major. But that's to be expected, as BC and JC haven't been very forthcoming. I'd love for the Pumpkins to start a new alt rock movement that doesn't include emo bands. There are SO MANY good indie bands that deserve recognition but for whatever reason aren't getting much (i.e. Bloc Party, Stars, Rock Kills Kid, TV on the Radio, The Decemberists, Cat Power).

Everything has to be an anti-emo thread doesn't it?
._.

Anyhow, it seems most emo people idolize the pumpkins. Especially the big artists right now. I read a review from '00 of MACHINA that stated "The pumpkins will never go down in history as changing music." But this is wrong, as I see it, the pumpkins created what everyone calls "emo." I like it a lot, but it is time for a musical change... A lot of it does sound the same.

It will surely outsell the last Pearl Jam cd. So by that comparison it will do well.

It really depends on what his voice sounds like. Casual fans(yes you need them to do well commercially) will respond to that the strongest. I think if he sang the zwan cd with all the sweet sighs and production of say SD days it would of done VERY WELL. But most people don't care for the way he sang on that record even though it had lots of drums, riffs, solos, etc.

I think it will be debut at #1 in the country but quickly fall off the charts. The way billy is talking I think promotional bs like mtv interviews and all that will be very rare. He said his plan for the new pumpkins will be unconventional which usually means the mainstream won't 'get it.'

I really wish he would just do what he said in an interview once. He mentioned putting all the songs he had worked on online. The fans would be able to hear all those songs and after a period of time vote on which ones should be on the album. That way he can exist as a experimental artist and a commercial one. I really thought that would be awesome. Maybe a 30 a year annual fee to be a 'voting member'. Real fans get to pick the best songs. I think that would also help him commercially while us hardcore people get all the bside goodness as well. When he releases the cd, the voters would get it for free and the other songs on a limited edition disc too. Oh the possibilities.

I think most of us can agree that the past albums would be a lot different if we were given that influence.

For example, Take me down would of never made it onto MCIS.

It all comes down to what Billy wants to do with it, if he wants it to be some wierd experimental thing (cough the future embrace cough) i dont think it will do that well commercialy (although i will still love it im sure), but if he wants to "bring back the true essence of rock and roll" by making it a bit more poppy to get peoples attention then i think it will do briliantly.

(P.S: quote is rough translation of the coheed and cambria guitarists motto)

dudehitscar, that would be great, I agree, but how can they make sure that only the real big fans can vote which tracks make it to the album?

Besides that, I think the name 'Smashing Pumpkins' itself is enough for the media to pay a lot of attention to the release of their new album, after all, the pumpkins were one of the most commercially and critically acclaimed bands of the nineties... I don't think there will be a publicity problem. Believe me, when the new album comes out, everyone's gonna know.

Mmm. But ofcourse, the album isn't out yet. The 'reformation of the pumpkins' has always sounded a little vague, because James and D'arcy aren't in, that's maybe why the reunion itself didn't get a lot of attention. Once the album comes out, you're gonna know, even in Australia.

It might be like when the Pixies reformed. It wont be particularly commercially popular, but they will still be massive to fans; selling out shows in the blink of an eye and the like...

And, they will definately be bigger if James is i it, and even bigger if Darcy is back (but thats pretty unlikely)

Speaking of James and D'arcy, do you think they would ever rejoin? Even if they're not doing the first album, it's always possible that they'll work with BC and JC on later stuff. If the message is out that BC isn't being a control freak anymore - or whatever caused and to leave is over with and done - then they wouldn't have much reason to stay away, right? Clearly they both love to make music, or at least James. We don't really know with D'arcy, since she dropped off of the face of the planet. James is still very involved with new music.

im sure its getting a mention on the j's....its funny though cos people will ask me about my tattoo on my spine which is just a plain black star but i got it at the height of my pumpkins mania (ha) so i tell the that my favourite band is the pumpkins and theyre all like "wow i loved the pumpkins!! i have all their albums" and so im like dude theyre back together and they dont believe me!!!! or they dont really care

some people forget music when they get older believe it or not. this guy im seeing has all the same stuff that i do but he doesnt listen to it as much as he used to. loved the pumpkins, now its the same thing too, he doesnt really care. he'll ocasionally listen to his ipod but ive never heard a cd on at his place, theyre all in a box!! he claims that thats what he comes to my house for ha.

Yeah in Australia I haven't heard a lot of mention of them either
People I've talked to remember them but had no idea they're back. But I guess people will realize it when the new album is released.
