Pre-Gish or Post-Machina? 1 Year, 10 Months ago
What do you think of Pre-Gish? Pre-Gish was a pretty good era where the Pumpkins were young (pretty much college age) and had some fresh ideas in their minds. This is personally one of my favorite eras along with Siamese Dream.

What do you think of Post-Machina? They still had a little time after they released their final album. They released the "Untitled" single which was incredible. They also re-recorded "Real Love" for Greatest Hits, which sounded great. Did you enjoy Zwan? I personally thought "Mary Star of the Sea" was a great album. What did you think of "TheFutureEmbrace"? Did you think it was a good solo album? How did some of the negative reviews affect you? It made me think some of those reviewers were crazy. What do you think about the upcoming release of Zeitgeist and their reformation?

Basically, which was your favorite era and why?

Since I'm hardcore, I love everything Billy has done. My favorite era might actually be Machina, although I know most people will not agree. I did love Mary, Star of the Sea VERY much. TheFutureEmbarce was pretty good too. But yeah, I am a firm believer that Zeitgeist will BLOW US ALL AWAY! I think 'post-Machina' will, in the end, bury 'pre-Gish'.
That's just me though, haha.

The post machina didn't attract me as much, not as rockin as I'd hope. i mean honestly I'm a lyric guy, but I didn't find the music interesting as much as pre-gish, probably because of Billy's solo album being so electronic.

But yeah there kinda new wave like songs before Gish were very fun to listen to, gave me ideas for my own music, and the Spiteface lick is so fun to play on guitar. And i think the younger the lyricist (within reason of course) the more fun it is to listen to the lyrics, bu thats prolly because i'm young though.

Anywho Pre gish for me, but I liked Machina a lot, so hopefully Zeitgeist is all pumpkins and awesome.

pre-gish was great, with "jennifer ever" and "my eternity" and "she" and all... but the pre-gish era is over and out.
The pre-machina era is only about to begin...
I agree that it will blow us away. ZEITGEIST will be the best album of our modern times.

Re: Pre-Gish or Post-Machina? 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Post-Machina... Pre-Gish was great, there are many great songs that The Pumpkins came out with in that time. But Post-Machina for me... Zwan I think is very underrated and there are a lot of great songs on Mary, Star Of The Sea, many of which probably won't be heard by a lot of people because it didn't get the attention it should have gotten in my opinion. I'm still undecided about TheFutureEmbrace. I'm not going to say it's a bad album, it just didn't seem to appeal to me. I like some of the tracks off of there but as a whole the album isn't my favourite...
I'm confident Zeitgeist will be awesome though!

I think both eras are hit-and-miss. I love some of the pre-Gish songs, especially "Jennifer Ever," but I'm not as familiar with it as post-Machina. I love Machina II, it ties with Adore as my second favorite Pumpkins album. I like Zwan, but for the most part in small doses. Being a teenager, I can "wallow" in the angst of the Pumpkins more than in the "glee" of Zwan. I don't think TheFutureEmbrace is a great album, but I do like a few of the songs, especially "I'm Ready," "All Things Change," and "To Love Somebody."

Pre-Gish. I'm not a big fan of Machina (though I like The Everlasting Gaze and Stand Inside Your Love). Machina II was pretty good. I liked the first four tracks of Mary Star Of The Sea, but the rest of the album wasn't so good IMO. I like a few tracks off of TheFutureEmbrace, but overall it was disappointing. I hope with Zeitgeist the Pumpkins return to good old Rock and Roll instead of electronic mush (which is what most of Machina sounds like to me).

It depends what mood I'm in...sometimes I like happy music (zwan), other times I'm after something else...

Also, sometimes I actually re-listen to songs which I generally skip past, and discover that my tastes have changed, and I LOVE them. This happened to me recently with Age of Innocence. Most Pretty song EVER. Seriously, I'm in love...

Re: Pre-Gish or Post-Machina? 1 Year, 9 Months ago
I'm definately a Machina fan. Adore should have lost me but it didn't, and when Machina came and had the combinded influence of Adore and some of the earlier, more guitar-based rock was just the right mix heading forward for more musical progression. Less wordy version - I like the Pumpkins because they advance and change. Each album comes off like an experiment in sound, each one with merit.

Zwan... I wanted to believe in it, and the album was great, but the world didn't buy into it, and the band, I guess, wasn't what we all thought it was. I don't know the details of the break-up, but when Billy's doing interviews calling them "BAD PEOPLE" and saying he'd never go anywhere near them again, it's bad. And I can get why he says the album sounds like a lie, because, really it does. A happy Billy is a great thing, but it seemed so forced. It was like, "let's throw a few more rainbows on the album cover and have the band hang out in the videos like they're all buddy-buddy, then have peace marches and teddy bears hugging and shit like that, and everyone will buy it. I'm happy, dammit! Happy, happy HAPPY!!!!!" And it was upsetting, because I was really jazzed about this. Billy being all positive and shit, and I wanted that. I grew up miserable and found the Pumpkins, and it helped me deal, but now that I wasn't a kid anymore and wasn't so goddamn miserable all the time, I was happy to see my favoirte songwriter, the guy who inspired me to set pen to paper and write my feelings, find his positive side, too. "Honestly" was great, and it was nice to have Billy and Jimmy back in the same band. Who cares if they changed the name? i didn't. I just didn't want it to be a lie, and in the end, it was, and it really pissed me off. So much so, I didn't even bother with TheFutureEmbrace until almost a year later, when I finally heard "Mina Loy".

Now, I think I can say in good confidence I'm a Post Mellon Collie fan, as almost anything I listen to, Pumpkins or Billy related these days is from Adore and after.
