Will the Smashing Pumpkins have a hard time in the US? 1 Year, 9 Months ago
|

Right off the bat, a lot of US fans have felt somewhat disappointed and even betrayed with the fact that the band hasn't scheduled many US shows at all (only one festival in Baltimore so far), especially the first show, which was hoped by many to be at the Metro. (international fans, keep your "cry me a river" comments to yourselves, please )
Now that James won't be in it, as was obvious on the SP Myspace page, a lot of fans are very disappointed.
With these two factors taken into consideration, do you think the new SP will have a harder time winning back the US crowd?

I think it depends on the album. If it's well-recieved, most will probably say "James who?" And about the France vs. US thing, while I'm disappointed that I won't be able to go to the very first reunion show, it's their band, not ours. I live in the suburbs of Chicago, so I thought that going to the reunion show was definitely a possibility, but now.. not so much. Oh well. I'm guessing that their first non-festival date in the US will be in Chicago. At least I'm hoping.

I agree that it depends on the album, but are the pumpkins not touring the U.S really going to keep a true pumpkins fan from seeing them?

i was looking through the comments on their myspace page and they were quite... agressive, though alot of them were from the same person. haha
when i first saw that the (james) news came out i went straight to netphoria because no one was on this board. and the overall straight up feel was "fuck billy"
i think theyve all cooled down a bit now, but a few people say that they wont be a part of SP2, and that it was billys fault. then again theres still quite a few that seem to be on SP2's/billy's side.. so theres mixed reactions everywhere.
they pissed off a few fans with the news about the first show and now this whole james thing, i think in the US they wont be as popular as now, but thats just my oppinion.

Not only have they set themselves up for a hard time in the US, but by playing festivals, in general; there are gonna be people there that just wanna give them a hard time, although they no little about the music, but just wanna cause riots because some people are angry about the lineup.

the 50 or so fans that spend all this time bitching on the internet do not speak for the masses. The less people care about the new pumpkins the cheaper the tickets are. So let there be a mass burnoff of the whiners. Corgan doesn't need the money, doesn't want the fame, he just wants to play his music. Screw the haters.
I didn't like the new Mars Volta album but you don't see me on their messageboard everyday saying shit like "volta sucks now, the money went to their heads, they need to start doing drugs again, cedric's an asshole, blah blah blah."
Fuck the nay sayers. They remind me of the people that never forgave Bob Dylan for going electric. They would buy tickets to his shows and shout at him "Traitor!". Dylan survived and so will Corgan.

oh it will be an uphill battle for the pumpkins in the US. While Billy has been doing stuff here and there, the Pumpkins themselves have been out the scene for 7 years now. Music has changed considerably since 2000. If what Linda Strawberry says about the new album is true, perhaps its that the Pumpkins are testing the waters in Europe and buying some time to see how the new music is received here in the states. Despite James not returning and the lack of U.S shows so far, i don't think the majority of america would have welcomed them back with open arms anyway. I hope for the best though.

I don't think they will have a hard time in the US per se. . I think they will have a hard time capturing new fans and maybe earning back some old ones due to the length of time they have been out of the circuit.
I for one am psyched for Baltimore though! wooooooooooot!
Hey Rivers - you still coming to party?

If Billy doesn't need the money, Why is he using the name Smashing Pumpkins??? Its simple to me - not as many people would be talking about a new Zwan album. Why else would he keep the members a secret so long?
I think that the "Corgan" fans really won't care much about the who's in the band besides Billy...(though there aren't as many of them as they would like to think)
The "SP" fans highly out-number the "Corgan" fans and they will be devastated and hard to win over with such a Zwan-like line up.

Now that I've thought about it a little more, I've realized that they probably will have a very hard time getting on top of the music scene again. Not necessarily because James and possibly D'arcy aren't in the band, but they haven't been at the top of the commercial game since Mellon Collie, around 10 years ago. If they're picking up where they left off financially, which was still good, just not as good as they would have liked it to be, it's going to be an uphill battle.

Wow, why would SP be hated for not announcing their full itinerary? They are announcing new shows all the time. Yesterday a new show was announced in Luxembourg and a few days ago one in Germany, there will be shows in the US but you have to wait until it's closer to time.
