My question is:

Does anyone think that Billy is using the "SP" name just to create more excitement for his new project? I mean - why not call it Zwan 2 or TFE 2? The obvious answer is that there would not be as much excitment about a project under those titles. It's suspicious to me that Billy would keep the line-up a secret for this long knowing full well James and D'arcy were not involved. It seems now that he just wanted to use that suspense to fuel the album. Heck if James wouldn't have said anything we would still be in the dark...Right?

Billy's not the type to use it as a marketing gimick.

I don't know why he kept it a secret, maybe there was some problems with the lineup and they weren't ready to announce who's in the band or something. It could be anything. But I don't think it's a scheme to get more record sales. Besides, I'd say just about everything on this forum is going to go out and buy Zeitgeist when it comes out regardless of whether James and D'arcy are in it or not. I don't think he'd use the Smashing Pumpkins name to sell albums. Besides, anything that has both Billy and Jimmy will be great, and we don't even know whoelse is in the lineup yet anyway.

No matter when it was announced, fans were bound to be disappointed. Music fans are vicious if they don't get things their way. It was a lose-lose situation, so I would imagine that keeping quiet was the best approach for Billy.

The first single from the album may come out before the first performance, so maybe they wanted to let the music do the talking rather than the appearance of band members.

I'm discussing the reality of it. Whether you like it or not the name Smashing Pumpkins is bigger than Billy Corgan (TFE sales will show u that) and "anything with Billy and Jimmy" includes the Zwan project (which may be great in your opinion but public opinion differs)

I mean - if u were going to attempt to reunite sorry "revive" the band - is this the way? Don't include the original members and don't tell the fans you aren't including them? I mean when you say SP certain faces and names come to mind...so to throw that name out there and not be straight up about who's involved is just shady to me, like he was giving us this false hope.

Hey, I'm going to buy the album - but I also know the music buisness and whether u all know it or not - Billy is not a dumb buisness man.

Everyone is talking this "ideals" crap - But at the same time they give Billy all of the creative credit for the band "Billy was the heart and soul of the band"...SO the ideals of SP WERE the Ideals of Billy Corgan - Why not make an album that expresses your ideals under your own name??? (Oops! tried that) POINT: If u want to express something through your music, what name u use shouldnt matter. WHY then - WHY go back to the SP name? HE could have revived Zwan or did another solo project to express his ideals.


OK just explain this:

I want my songs back - He was just releasing a solo project, who's songs were those???

first of all, who is they? A lot of people think Billy is God, but I like to think all of the members made the Smashing Pumpkins. I also believe that HE thinks that..we all know he likes to control things and may be a little egotistical at times, but I don't think he thinks he was the only one that mattered in any band he's been in.

THAT's why the Smashing Pumpkins aren't the same as Zwan, or TFE. This isn't the Billy Corgan Band. That's why the ideals and characteristics of the Smashing Pumpkins aren't the same as Zwan or TFE. You might here references, similarities and the like, because Billy was in all of these bands.

Just because it's always been about Billy's idea(l)s, doesn't mean that he has different sorts of ideas that he puts forward in his projects. Saying that it was always just about Billy, implies that all his projects are the same. No one disagrees if I say that Zwan is still substantially different from the pumpkins or TFE, even though it's all "just Billy".

He wants an excuse to play the old pumpkins songs again and make more music in that genre. It was not a stunt.

So when, according to you, did the pumpkins cease to be the pumpkins?

thats a tough one. i dont see them as the pumpkins at the moment. just billy and jimmy? i dont associate just those two people with the music that i live for. (as clique as it sounds)
i associate that music with billy, jimmy, darcy and james. those four people will always be the smashing pumpkins to me.

geez, why is everyone acting like billy's a jerk for calling it SP even though james isn't involved. Most bands out there hardly ever keep the same lineup, yet they continue with the same name. If you think this can't be the Pumpkins without james then how can you say it's Zwan2 if all the other zwan members aren't involved?

OHHHHH! The man has a point. Think of G'n'R (for lack of a better example). Axl Rose still uses the name Guns and Roses but he's the only remaining original member. But he only takes heat for Slash and the others...not the fans. So be supportive guys.
