Cuz most of us aren't Nazis.

We should just call it "Z"

Why is it that the song names are better than the album title...why didn't they just call the album "Orchid" or "Doomsday Clock" - Zeitgeist suxx so hard.

Yeah, poor germans. They can't help the fact that they speak an awful language. And that their ancestors tried to take over the world.

I'm convinced that you will like the album title in time, when the album comes out and you will hear its greatness

First Impressions: Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist

Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist (Reprise)

Release Date: 07/07/07

Tracklisting:

1. Doomsday Clock [3:41]
2. 7 Shades Of Black [3:15]
3. Orchid [3:58]
4. That's The Way [3:44] <- KEY TRACK
5. Tarantula [3:47]
6. Starz [3:41]
7. United States [9:50]
8. Never Lost [4:13] <- KEY TRACK
9. Bring The Light [3:35]
10. Come On (Let's Go) [3:15]
11. For God And Country [4:51]
12. Pomp And Circumstance [4:18]

Background:

* Produced by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, with Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date working separately on various tracks.

* Billed as a "reunion", though only Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin are present.

* It's the first Smashing Pumpkins album since 2000's Machina suite. In the interm Corgan has done one Zwan album and one solo album.

First Impressions:

* Tracks #1 thru #7 are all aggresive, up-tempo guitar rock except for #4, "That's The Way", which is our guess for 1st single as it's the most "pop" track with a catchy verse and chorus.

* "Never Lost" is one of the only ballad-y tracks. Like many of the Pumpkins' classics, it is low-key, but still driven by its composition and melodies. Plus there are strings.

* The last two tracks are the only ones which are keyboard driven, with "Pomp And Circumstance" sporting timpani drums, choir-like vocals and squelching guitar.

* Corgan's signature guitar tone is still as rich and forceful as it ever was.

* As we have seen with the new lineup, Corgan's voice is what (supposedly) defines the Smashing Pumpkins as a band. But, much like in Zwan, here it seems that his natural angst is somewhat artificial and his screaming seems mellow in comparison the Pumpkins of the past.

Prediction:

* With the recent commercial success of new bands like Silversun Pickups, it's uncertain whether or not the those outside the core SP fanbase will feel the need to reacquaint themselves with Smashing Pumpkins.

- blog.filter-mag.com/filter/2007/04/first_impressio.html

So... I think we can derive just a bit of speculation from the track timings.

It may be the greatest album in the world but the name still suxx. Don't get me wrong - I've loved all the album names Billy has chosen up until now, even his solo project and Zwan's effort.

Re: Smashing Pumpkins II 1 Year, 8 Months ago
it seems to be a trend nowadays to make an album about the times and the situation in america.
"american idiot" (ok that was a while back, but the same problem anyway), "because of the times" (from kings of leon), qotsa are releasing an album called "era vulgaris", and then there is zeitgeist...
I think zeitgeist is an ok title for a lame concept, I don't see what's wrong with the name.

My problem with the name is 1) To most of the world it has no meaning 2) It doesn't sound cool to say 3) Even when you find out the meaning - you're still not sure what it means

Number 1 and 3 wouldnt make a difference if we could just have number 2.

I think it's a cool title. From all the message boards I've read, the majority of people like the title. 60% of people on this site like the title and 24% think it's okay. www.thepumpkins.net/component/option,com.../task,results/id,47/

it's way better than just calling it "spirit of the times" in any case. I don't speak german but I knew what the word "zeitgeist" meant.

I'm from Belgium. OK, I admit, it's pretty close to Germany but maybe it's because dutch (or flemish) sounds a little like german. The flemish translation of "zeitgeist" would be "tijdsgeest", so the term is kind of transparant for me.

I don't know where I know the word from, I just...was familiar with it.

The idea I had in my head was like...I guess similar to the 'culture', 'popular opinion', 'world view' (etc) of people at a particular time. "Spirit of the time" is (obviously) a good definition, but also a little abstract. Like, it's hard to make sense of.

For anyone who's interested, this is an example of an english interpretation of the word:
