SP's legacy in a blender 1 Year, 8 Months ago
I was having the idea that, based on what we've heard about Zeitgeist so far, Billy has really made this album a mixture of his entire musical career.

* We know that Doomsday Clock sounds like Geek USA, and there were other indications that they're really going back to the Siamese Dream era musically

* I think it was the pumpkin queen who said that a particular song reminded her of Zero, another reminded her of Bodies, so there is definetly a MCIS sound to the album as well. Plus another source said that the dynamics were also very extreme, in the style of mellon collie.

* "For God And Country" and "Pomp and Circumstance" have synths in them, which is a reference to Adore, Machina or even TFE.

* Certain titles (and I assume also the lyrics) sound kind of zwan-ish, like "That's The Way", "Never Lost" or "Come On (Let's Go)".

maybe you know other elements that I am forgetting right now?

So this made me hope that it's going to be some kind of superior combination of all that was good about past pumpkins or corgan works...

any comments?

I see what you're getting at Joene but I dont think you can judge from what someone else says about a song. U definitely cant say that "we know" what any of the music sounds like - I.E. just because it has synths? I for one dont know anything about the pumpkin queen or the guy that wrote all this other stuff and I'm too picky to take my advice from people i know nothing about. The titles just sound like titles Billy would choose in any era. I for one can see a song called "Orchid" appearing on any of Billy's projects. In all - i think people are taking too much from the little info we have.

I've even seen people asking questions like what should the first single be. All we have are songtitles - how can anyone pick out what song is a single from just the name of the song?

I do like the title of this thread though - but I would change it to SP's Legacy in a Blender.

My mother and Father played a major role in this achievment because without them i would have no fingers. (So Thanks Mom) Also - The computer techs at my job for not blocking this website (but meanwhile blocking myspace leaving me no choice but to come here...JK) Most of all I want to thank YOU ALL for reading - because what's a post if someone doesn't read it and either agree with you or get really pissed?

So to U all thank you - and here's to a thousand more!!!!!

Re: their entire career in a blender 1 Year, 8 Months ago
i'm sure it won't be one of those career-blender types things. critic were saying MSoTS sounded like siamese dream, but we all know that's not completely true. even james said siamese dream was going to sound like gish except more spacey, but we all saw how drastically different the two are. when you hear something new, you automatically try to familiarize yourself with it by connecting it to something old, which is really the only way to describe it. that's why everyone said TFE was like adore. similarities don't make things completely similar

p.s. - even mellon collie had synths! it was no adore

first of all, congratulations to Believe, now on to number 2000

And I knew this was kind of a pointless thread because we can't really judge these things based on the info we've got, as you say, but there is nonetheless no doubt that their entire legacy will be present in zeitgeist in one way or another.
The question for me is: will they create a genius mixture of past greatness or will they just repeat theirselves (which is something they have never done before, luckily)?

(Thanks Joene - your thread made it possible)

Whatever it is - it will sound nothing like the original Pumpkins...Times have changed...Billy has changed...No Darcy and James.

I will be happy regardless of what era they pull from...but, if it sounds like zwan then I'm sorry I will probaby put the cd in my rack and never look at it again.

I am very optimistic though. I dont think I could handle another let down like zwan.

you might consider zwan a letdown in terms of pumpkins quality, but it was still a lot better than other stuff that is released nowadays. I personally consider zwan the proof that billy could also go in other musical directions with good result (the statement that zwan is an "other musical direction" is ofcourse arguable, it's just my opinion )

I really like MSOTS. Whenever I want to listen to happy pop/rock I put it on...it's really good quality, fun music. In my opinion. And the drumming rocks, obviously

"Yo yo! Reppin' Martha's Mursic, Dis is Cowboy Bill about to lay down a hot track, y'all! Turn da bass up on dis one!"

sadly, I would buy it to. anyways, i'll just be happy when the album comes out so everyone can actually discuss it. all this speculating just feels like waiting for christmas as a kid... it feels like it'll never come

Ahhh yessss - the infamous date of doom - marked by the end of the Mayan calendar (among other sources).

But do you want them to make records until the end of time if they suck??? With quantity you lose quality. People wanted Micheal Jordan to play basketball forever but at some point you start to ruin your legacy i think.

also:
I just love people who degrade things they know nothing about - like rap - oh and dont count it out of Billy's career choices...he's a little more open minded about music then you all (obviously) -

"...When I watch Missy Elliot, it's the same thing as when I watched Soundgarden for the first time. I get that same excitement, and you feel like someone is doing something that is so new. Maybe to some people it sounds like the same old thing, but to me it sounds so fresh."

Ah yes, but rap isnt new anymore

When i say rap i dont mean the good side of rap, i call that hip hop, i consider rap to be hip hops commercial child. But we have had this discusion before, you know what i mean.

What's with the 21st of december 2012? nucleair attacks? tsunami? giant earthquake? sun explosion?

I want them to keep making albums too. It's true that they might ruin their legacy, but the chance that they might enrich their legacy is more important to me than the risk that they might ruin it.
