Here's something I've been wondering about, and want some speculation/guesses from others. My favorite part about Billy's vocals is him live in concert. His screaming, his raspy voice when he gets loud... do you think he still can/will be able to create the same type of energy live?? No, we won't know much until he hits the stage, and we have Zeitgeist in our hands. But since the end of the original Pumpkins, we have heard a big change in Billy's singing. He's never really had a loud song since Machina, and I hope he is still able to deliver those same screaming, skin-crawling vocals he used to create on the stage. I think he still can do it, but I wonder if his voice has changed so much, that he will stick to a little less-intense style in concert...

Sooooo... what are your thoughts? Haha, yes, these are very random thoughts that I've had...

I remember reading somewhere that sometime after Adore, Billy had started taking vocal lessons. I can't really confirm this, however, I do remember reading it. Perhaps Billy has just learned to sing. I agree that I enjoy the older style better. There are some slight differences in Machina from Adore and Mellon Collie, but there is a much greater difference in those and Zwan and his solo album.

Can he still tear it up? Absolutely. Think about Metallica and all these other bands that can still play and play loud. Billy is a perfectionist, and he wants to be the best he can be. He continually pushes himself to improve on everything, and that's what he's done. He hit some notes on the Zwan album that he could never have hit before.

To Summerize, his voice has actually gotten better, technically speaking. Much better in fact. And yes, he can still scream, he basically invented it.

Get some tickets to a show, and if he plays An Ode to No One, you will feel better (I know I would). Bodies would also suffice.

Well I think he may be still capable of it, considering heavy songs like "Spilled Milk" which Zwan performed live.

I'm hoping he still has it in him, since his voice is so unique and it just pours out of him and into the listeners, which is what made me fall in love with him and the band in the first place.

I know, most people find the whiny voice annoying, but its the first thing that drew me in, it made me step up and take notice. Yes its different but it suits it so well, i dont like that billy learned to sing, i prefered it when he whined, but whatever, he can do what he likes. Im sure there will be a few heavy songs on there, it wouldnt be a pumpkins album without silverfuck/XYU

voice and songs go together perfect in my opinion ......however I know his voice does put off people.
Was in the pub recently and was talking bout different bands with my mate, his opinion was that the mumsic was very good, but he couldnt get into them because of Billys voice

A very good friend of mine was an errand boy for Joe Shanahan -who values Billy and looks at him as a close personal friend- anyways, my friend was sent to pick up exactly 200 Camel cigarettes (thats a carton) at Billy's request. My friend says he smokes like a chimney and never dumps the ashtray.

I heard he can't stand cigarettes or even the smell of them.

This happened during the Zwan era. Perhaps the stress of trying to make his new band gain the momentum of SP was too much on him and he resorted to drastic measures.

I think it was on that blog, or livejournal-I think, what I remember is that he said he couldn't stand the smell of cigarettes due to the fact it reminded him about his childhood and all these bad memories. I could have mis-read, but that's what I remember.

I've also heard that Billy doesn't like admitting his faults. Perhaps this might explain why most people don't know he smokes?

That could be it!
He could be on and off again, or privetly smokes...but I thought he was hard core against smoking and drugs due to the fact his bandmates were too involved in drugs.

I can't picture him with a cigarrette in his mouth... EVER!!

He's taken a lot of singing lessons the past several years... would he ruin that work by blacking his lungs?? I highly doubt that...
