i've actually been looking around at other boards people think music is headed back to a more guitar oriented style. a 90's "revival" if you will. revolution or revival, i'm happy either way.

Yeah, im quiet surprised with bands like silversun pickups, they seem to have gathered a pretty large fan base rather quickly, its not often guitar band do that. Plus, they sound so damn pumpkin-esque its good stuff

i think mellon collie would make for an epic movie i heard reviews that it was the wall for gen x so a take on that would be neat.

Its to broad to be a movie, almost any topic could be tackled by MCIS, and because of that it would be difficult to stay true to the pumpkins origins. Machina would be the better choice

the movies wouldnt have to make sense, theyd just have to be trippy, sister songs would continue where the first left off, haha, whatever thats a wicked topic

You people are crazy! Billy isn't the best guitar player out there (even he's said that) but the way he plays is always clever and goes with the song, same goes with the solos.

If you listen to Slunk's solo it sounds like its just random picks but if you listen to it carefully you can see where it goes with the music. Same goes for Geek USA's solo, that sounds extremly different but still goes perfectly with the song.

As for generic, I could pick out his guitar playing anywhere.

he's only got better as a guitaist over the year i've always thought he was underated no one gives him the credit he deserves.

yeah he is under rated as a guitarist, however smashing pumpkins have two songs on the top 100 guitar solos list. Cherub rock and Geek usa.

Billy has a very Jimi Hendrixesque style. If you are familiar with Jimi's live work, you can make some serious comparisons with their similar tone and guitar technique. I was watching a new Hendrix DVD from his Woodstock performance and could hear how great of an influence he had on Billy's style. They are both very aggressive, don't tend to play their solo's the same every time they play, and in my opinion...they both display some serious 'attitude'. I especially love Billy's guitar work on Ascendo from Guitar World's "Smell the Fuzz" album. He kicks some serious ass. Jimmy plays drums on it too.

i'm gonna be a hypocrite...I haven't read the whole thread, but my 2 cents:

I happen to believe that billy does have a unique soloing style..the way he does might not be unique, but when it all comes together....the phrasing, the notes and scales he uses, I can't think of anybody that sounds like him.

It doesn't get better than the album version of starla...shivers every time

For my first post I just wanna say that Billy's guitar talent and songwriting abilities are what attracted me to the Smashing Pumpkins!!! And yes Corgan is an extremely unique writer in both the fields of lyrics and musical composition!!!
