Cover scheme 1 Year, 5 Months ago

if you are like me than you have been keeping up with the covers that are a part of this spin tribute to the smashing pumpkins on myspace... my(sp)ace... things of the like.
and if you are also like me then you will agree how most of the covers are just BULLOCKS.
i am starting to think that this might have been some sort of scheme that was thought up to show that the pumpkins' music is untouchable... and to show that all of these currently popular bands have done such a crap job in their attempts to emulate what was done so flawlessly way back when.

It was more likely thought up to sell copies of SPIN magazine.
I don't think it was thought up so that it could show how untouchable the Pumpkins are, but it sure succeeded in showing it. I heard that Hawthorne Heights version of BWBW, and I thought it was just really flat and boring. I haven't heard the studio version of Tonight, Tonight, but if it's anything like the live version, yeah, well you get my drift. Thats just what I think, I'm sure it will suit some peoples tastes. Hell, if it's cheap enough I might get it.

Yes the covers are indeed awful but there are two which I actually reeeally like & those are the cover of Cherub Rock by Sick Puppies which I think is amazing & Gliss' cover of Rhinocerous. I like these two covers the best because they have basically taken the songs in a completely different direction. As for the rest of them well its already been said, they are awful, namely Panic! at the Disco's Tonight Tonight, that is officially the worst cover I have EVER heard, even I could do better by myself! The fact its a live recording as well shows hwo friggin' lazy they are.

agreed that the gliss and sick puppies covers were significantly better than the others. i am still stuck on young love's 1979... can't quite make up my mind about it... it's definitely a different take on the song, it is hard for me to get past the feel of the original and start seeing it in different light.

I think the only good ones were The Bravery covering "Rocket" and Ben Kweller covering "Today."
Also, as an added note, I think the Cherub Rock cover was absolutely disgraceful...but you know...whatever you like

I'm sure you've all heard Evanescence's cover of Zero...it's not pretty.

I agree.
In line with the fact that they suck, P!ATD does everything horribly. (This is completely off topic, but they're version of This Is Halloween depressed the hell out of me and is a complete slap in the face to Danny Elfman)
But yeah the covers are terrible...and I agree with the fact that this album is showing just how untouchable Smashing Pumpkins' music is.

Well it's not completely untouchable, I think Ben Kweller did particularly amazingly.

I didn't think the Bravery cover was that great. My band could have done a better job in all aspects.
I think it would have been cooler if they got big name professional acts from the 90's and present to play the covers, like RCHP and Audioslave, because the bands that they went with are garbage.

You've just stirred a traumatic childhood memory in me. Um yes, Midnight in the Patch was an absolute embarrassment. Didn't some group make "Today" a country song? Ughhhhhh. The Gothic tribute to SP was pretty foul too.

I saw at Virgin they had this import of another tribute to SP. I didn't have enough time to take a good look at it and see who the bands were. Anyone else see it?

Yeah, I stay away from tribute albums to be honest. I'm guessing it is absolutely awful?

I wasn't keen on those two covers. Not saying that they're bad I just didn't really like them very much & plus I've never really been a fan of The Bravery...
