this album has received one of the widest ranges of mixed reviews in recent memory...2 stars from AllMusicGuide (usually a good source of reviews) and yet 4 stars from Rolling Stone (obviously an awful source of reviews)...
- "B" from Entertainment Weekly
- 4 stars from Uncut
- 4 stars from Village Voice
- 3.5 stars from The New York Times
- 6.9/10 from IGN
- 3 stars from Blender
- 5/10 from NME
- 4.9/10 from Pitchfork
- 2 stars from Q
- "D+" from The Guardian

The only not so great things about this album are the vocals on United States, God and Country's music, and some would say Pomp.

I'm not going to take this review and more serious than I do any other simply because it backs up my own points of view, but it's still pleasing to know that at least some of these critics gave it a fair listen.
Bottom line: music critics have no idea what they're talking about. The simple fact that they are critics almost guarentees their own horrendous taste in music. It may not make sense, but it's the way of the world.

Yay for rolling stone! They always give the Pumpkins a decent review and they deserve it.
I was under the impression that they almost never give good reviews. I thought they gave a medicore review for Siamese Dream and MCIS, which today are widely regarded as classics.
This array of opinions on Zeitgeist is bizarre. I whole-heartedly believed that allmusic.com would give a more positive and fair review, but they just ripped on the reunion without commenting on the songs for 3/4 of the review. Pitchfork gave a well-written review (although it got a 4.9/10, the text made it sound like something in the 6-7 range) and only mentioned the history/background briefly. Zeitgeist has tossed the music world upside down! Billy, you clever boy, you achieved what you wanted. *
* I'm kinda sorta talking out of my ass now.

I'm happy Zeitgeist has received rave reviews from Rolling Stone. This means that ppl may be more inclined to go buy the album. As much as I don't like a lot of what RS does, it's a pretty popular magazine.

In my honest opinion, I think 1/2 of the music on Zeitgeist is lame. Pomp sucks, Come on lets go sounds too 70's, bring the light has too many bring the lights, for god and country sucks with the new music. What I'm excited about though is that the band is back, and playing knock out shows.
Hopefully someone tells them that not many fans like their Zwanesqe meets Enya ballads and for the next album it will be nothing but balls out rock.

But "pure balls-out rock" would be a little tiring. I like having a variety of songs on the album. I think that Zeitgeist tries to accomplish that, but some of those flop. The first and more rock half of the album sounds much more even, but it'd be nice to have some more experimental songs in there (minus heavy synths). I think that "For God and Country" could've been much better if they had gotten rid of the synths, but kept that little intro piece (the first 5 seconds).

it seems like most of the negative reviews didn't comment on the music itself much at all, the whole review was merely spent commenting on billy as a person and the significance of the reunion.

So I wasn't the only one that thought "Pomp" was Enyaesque? Nice call.
I like "Pomp", though. It's a very vulnerable song - kind of like the Gish and SD days in spirit, if not in sound.

I totally agree with that.
As for the balls out rock thing... I'd certainly like the next album to be more rocking, along the lines of SD or MCIS - both of which did find places for mellower tracks.
