is anybody else a just a little annoyed that the pumpkins are putting so many new songs that have just been written in the setlist? I know so far it's only been for residencies, but i think they will probably carry over to the regular US tour considering Billy took songs he wrote in Ashville and is playing them in San Francisco. This is the first tour back and for me anyway, i'm interested in hearing the classics, not something that was penned overnight that nobody knows the words to. What's worse is that these songs have all been quiet acoustic songs. If billy wants to bust out new material, write something that rocks. It almost makes you wonder if maybe what he's doing isn't 100% for the pumpkins, if you catch my drift?

am i paranoid or does anybody else feel the same way?

haha, i couldnt feel more oposite to you if i tried, i dont want to be spoon fed the same shit over and over again, i think the fact that they are doing this is simply wonderful, i am hungry for any pumpkins material i can get my hands on, having a new song every show is just increadible. Maybe if the songs dont "rock" enough for you, you could write billy a letter telling him how to write songs properly and how to get songs to "rock", because obviously quiet emotion filled acoustic songs arent "rocking" enough.

Me either. I quite like the new songs, and to clarify they aren't always played acoustic. I personally wish they would take out some of the mainstream singles that are cluttering up the set. I really don't need to hear Today, Disarm and BWBW over and over. They should fill those slots with better singles, such as I Am One or Ava Adore. Or (fingers crossed) Thru the Eyes of Ruby or anything along those lines. Anyway, just glad their giving me something to listen to.

im just so happy & thankful that they are back together & that they are touring full stop.& like the post before me-they should remove a few like "today","BWBW" etc. & play some more obscure "rare" tracks-especially "Thru the eyes of Ruby",im hoping when they visit Australia i get the chance to hear something ive never heard before, but after so many years some bands tour very little-or not at all,the more gig's the better.

thats my point though, that rather than playing four songs that were just written he could play only two and then put in some of the non singles favorites like I Am One, Geek USA, Porcelina, etc.

I agree most of the way. I love the fact that they're writing new songs on the go, but I'd love to hear some rockers. They all are acoustic or really soft electric with a bunch of harmonics.

Give us one with feeling. Is Billy not able to write at his SD/MSIC level anymore?

I've heard too many SP songs that sound like "That's the Way" or "Zeitgeist". I want to hear another one that rocks like "Bodies" or "Mayo"

They have been playing a lot of old hits so I'm not complaining there. The purpose of these resendency shows was to create new songs, and I don't think they'll be doing much of that when they're on the rest of the tour because they will be travelling between shows. So expect a lot more old favs to come out then.

I see what you're saying, Alienbob. But we have to realize that though this is a reunion tour, it's not a greatest hits/nostalgia tour necessarily.

I'm just happy that Ginger and Jeff actually are having a true creative hand in this. Cos initially, it sounded as if they were disposable hired guns.

Pumpkins fans are the best in the world. I don't know any other fans of a band that don't want to hear their favorite band's hits over n' over at a concert. And I've loved all of the new songs they've been playing, but I would love if they wrote and played a hard and/or fast song at one of these shows.

Do they actually write parts of the songs? In Jeff's latest blog he mentions something about each member writing parts for individual instruments, but then later he says that they work on a song that Billy wrote or work on something that didn't go very well before. Do you think that anything Jeff and Ginger write each day goes into the new song, or is that morning song writing thing comletely unrelated from the songs debuted each night?

And back on topic, this may be a little self-centered, but not all of us fans were listening during the glory days (I was 10 when they broke up). Not all of the fans are in the same boat as you guys. It seems to me that the fanbase is growing with younger fans like me who still want to hear the hits. I just get that feeling from people online and seeing people my age/ a little younger buying their records.

I think is an interesting process this, make new songs and adding them to the tour i guess Billy it's interacting with his fans during his writing process and that's wonderful

Now i don't have it quite clear if they'll do a Zeitgeist world tour or this could be considered as the promo tour of the cd which could clarify your doubt if Billy will make this practice permanent from this tour on to future tours

It doesn't have to 'rock' to be a good song... his softer stuff is beautiful.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I'm sure that on the actual tour, they will mostly play Zeitgeist songs and the hits and classics. These residencies were intended to be something special, with them playing alternate versions of songs, practicing performing Zeitgeist songs live, some previously unreleased songs (Translucent!) and writing and trying out new songs, and sort of a way to include some fans in on the creative process and create a unique creative environment, or however they worded it.
So I think it's good for these residency shows that they don't play so many hits and classics. I wish more of my favorite bands would do special little things like these residencies. It seems very generous to me to include the audience in on something like that. Maybe that's just me though.

I think it's an amazing glimpse into the creative process, personally. how many bands out there would take a song that's not even a day old and play it live on stage during their first American show in 7 years? I think it's really cool they're doing that. and as for them all being acoustic....that's how the songwriting process starts more often than not. most (if not all) of their songs are born from something that was strummed out on an acoustic guitar and sung along to. I wouldn't be the least bit surprsied if some of these new songs show up on later albums with full instrumentation and rock a lot harder. for example, I think the fact he played rocket acoustic shows that that's how the song was in its original form when it was written. and I don't have to remind anybody how much that song rocks on the album.....does that make sense?

It's cool that they're playing new stuff, but from what I've heard (and understandably) they are all in a very early demo state. When I pay big bucks to go to a show I don't want too much of it used up with songs that are only 25% done.
I doubt they will play many new/demo songs on the main tour for that very reason - unless they put a lot more work into the songs first.

yeah, such a shame that my 20 bucks to get into the orange peel went to waste like that.

It makes the shows spontaneous.
