Billly Corgan guitar-related question 2 Years, 4 Months ago
Has anyone ever noticed listening to/watching a Billy Corgan guitar solo that he runs his hands up and down the neck several times during most solos (not on any specific frets, just sorta rubbing lightly against the strings if that helps). Does anyone know why he does this or where he got it from? I think it's cool, and do it myself as a result, I was just wondering.

That also reminds me that he also tends to vibrate the low strings on high frets quite a bit. These are just things that plague my mind...

just his personal style?

it's just filler in between chords, notes etc.

if you like weezer, watch one of their later performances with scott on the bass

he does the same thing

So vibrato and sliding. It's kind of pointless to do the former on bass, and I don't really do that, but I like bending up with my bandmates and it sounds kind of cool when all three of us are doing it at once. ;-)

Billy did this one thing on a performance of Jesus, I that's on YouTube somewhere, and he like, grabs at the nut on his guitar with his left hand and does vibrato with his right. I found that really interesting.

Yeah I think that's pretty cool too. I have a SP concert from '96 in Dusseldorf, and he does that during Porcelina and X.Y.U.

why do you think it's useless to do slides on the bass?

they can have fun too!

I wasn't referring to slides, I was talking about vibrato...which isn't as effective on an electric. The only place I find it appropriate is in orchestral stuff.

Slides however are great!

I am not that bad in bass and vocals
In a matter of fact I am thinking in creating a band by posting a "Vocal and and bass searching for..." in a megazine

There's nothing wrong with the rhythm section. Being the foundation of a band is definitely a good thing.

Besides, as a bass player you can pick up a guitar and do weird things with it that a guitarist could never think of.

Yep. It's like watching John Paul Jones play and loop three instruments at once.
