Compare the Pumpkins' popularity 1 Year, 4 Months ago

I'm curious as to how popluar the Pumpkins were in the 90s. I know that they were a big band then, but I'd just like opinions on the subject. To which band's current popularity would you compare the Pumpkins' from album to album (Ex: They were about as popular as The White Stripes during Mellon Collie, They were about as popular as Silversun Pickups during Gish, etc.)
Gish -
Siamese Dream -
Pisces Iscariot -
MCIS -
Adore -
MACHINA I/MACHINA II -

I can't say a lot about them, ´cause in my country (mexico) things are different , new bands come like in a second hand, not like the US or UK, they dont release the disc just until they're somehow "famous", so for new bands we wait 3 to 6 months until they're available here, (for zeitgeist we just waited 2 days more) grunge movement here was a "second hand grunge",cause we have different musical backgrouds than US, different kind of people and ,and bla bla bla.. (i could go on...)
also it was like "oh there is nirvana, there is pearl jam, there's bla bla bla, aaah and the SP", they were like "just for experts" i mean, they weren't as mainstream as the bands i mentioned before, but they were a hit among the people inside the movement, you could hear "smells like teen spirit" in the mainstream radio stations, but in order to hear "disarm" you had to tune the right station.
Nowadays pumpkins, nirvana, PJ, stone temple pilots and bla bla bla... are streamed only in one or two radio stations, "rock stations", and the pumpkins are treated as the great band they are, but still many people dont know who the hell they are,.

they were HUGE at the time of s/d and pisces, and even bigger when MC came out i mean i would see them on tv all the time, playing this concert, going to this award show...but that's when rock was the mainstream music choice of the time.

rap and r&b are slowly dying. I think people are just getting sick of it. Rap and R&B (rap with singing) is so adolescent and low-brow and unoriginal, it's not gonna last like rock n' roll has.

I've been a fan since 1992 and when SD came out they were HUGE, they were everywhere. Not as mainstream as say Nirvana but right up there with Pearl Jam.
It was a great time for alt rock/'grunge' and one that we will never see again.
When MCIS was released and Tonight Tonight came out they were probably the biggest alt rock band in the world!
Tonight Tonight won loads of awards and they were untouchable at that time.

So they were pretty much unavoidable for a time?
But what bands today would you compare them to in popularity by album?

Yes, it will. It will because people are retarded, and never get tired of listening to the same, old smut again and again. America is home to rap and R&B stations which play the same single ("Suicidal", "Party Like A Rockstar", "Big Girls Don't Cry" twice within five minutes of eachother...and people don't care!
Anyways, that was awfully off-topic of me...
Gish - Silversun Pickups
Siamese Dream - Fall Out Boy
MCIS - My Chemical Romance
Adore - Panic! at the Disco
Machina I&II - Uh, Finger Eleven?
Zeitgeist - ???

Gish -
Siamese Dream -
Pisces Iscariot -
(The first 3 I wouldn't know. I wasn't a fan then. I think my first introduction to SP was in 1994 when a kid I went to school with was wearing the Siamese Dream cover shirt.)
MCIS - This is in no way an exaggeration: We're talking Sgt. Pepper's here. Smashing Pumpkins were THE biggest band in the world from 1995-1996. It was such a great time to be a fun because they were everywhere.
Adore - A HUGE, unfortunate plummet because people weren't jiving to the "arcane night music." Still a little popular but weird, so maybe I'd say something like U2's "Pop" era. People still liked 'em but were a little baffled by the direction they were going. Their future was in jeopardy.
MACHINA I/MACHINA II - About the same as Adore. The fans were still devoted but media outlets were not. Perhaps comparable to Bloc Party's current status. (But healthier sales-wise.)
ZEITGEIST - I am honestly surprised and pleased by how much of a force SP still is! I definitely attribute it to a new generation discovering them, much like people my age helped Led Zep, Bowie and Hendrix become Hot Topic staples. Despite some backlash, I feel like this has been a really successful and well-worth reunion.

Thanks. Bloc Party's current status sounds like a good comparison critically, too. Silent Alarm was universally acclaimed, but A Weekend in the City (although I do love it) has gotten lukewarm reviews.

Depends which part of the world you where in. Here in the UK Early 90's We went Mad for american bands like GnR, Metallica then Nirvana, with early Gish era Pumpkins being slightly overshadowed.
Mid 90's UK where dominated by the emergance of Oasis, Blur and the rest of Brit Pop. Though Smashing Pumpkins along with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden where pretty much left holding the "American Alt Rock" flame after Kurt shot himself.
SD Got them noticed and by the time MCIS was released, they where a big name.....though just not as big as Oasis and Blur.
TBH I dont think you can compare the present music scene with the mid 90's because theirs very little talent making long lasting memorable music (come on whos going to remember any kick ass MCR or Fall out Boy riffs in ten years) other than a few such as Muse and the fantastic new band Biffy Clyro. Im just glad thiers a Shining Light on the musical horizon in the form of the Pumpkins

Thanks guys! This is actually something I have always wanted to know! Does anyone think that their popularity will continue to grow with this new album or do you think they have reached the peak of their new exposure with the releasing of the new album?

Biffy are absolutely brilliant, but they are not a new band!! Puzzle is their fourth album, they have been releasing albums since 2002 and they have been playing together since 1995-ish! I'm sorry to seem like an ass but I really hate when those kind of mistakes are made. 'Mon the Biffy.
I do think that Muse will be one of the bands of our generation, they are absolutely phenomenal and their live show is truely spectacular. I personally hope that history will be kind to both FOB and MCR as Patrick Stump of the former is a great pop writer, while My Chemical Romance were a dynamic and exciting group until The Black Parade, and they are better in concert now than ever.
I don't think that the Smashing Pumpkins will ever be as big as they were in the MCIS era (very few 'older' bands are), although there could be a big revival in commercial popularity on the cards. Once they recover from the 'Bonus tracks/Multiple editions' debacle then they should regain ground quickly, provided the singles do well.
