Impressions of Zeitgeist now 1 Year, 4 Months ago
|

ok...i must admit. when i first heard this album i was shocked. now upon many listenings....i cant believe how good this album really is. i know some of you were doubting it, saying there was to much of billys vocals, but i love the harmonies, each album is uniquely different. and i especially love the way it was produced. imagine if mellon collie was recorded like this!!! but the songs are getting better everyday. congratulations to you billy and jimmy, your work has been appreciated on this much anticipated album!!!!!!!!
ps....cant wait till they come to australia
pps...cant wait for the new dvd
ppps..cant wait for the new single (if any)

I never doubted it from the beginning. loved it from the first listen. and every time I hear it I find new things about it to love. I think god & country is a great song....its way better on the album than the acoustic live version. and i think pomp is a great finish to the album. great instrumentation to it and just a nice mellow way to bring you back down as the album ends. the only song I'm not much of a fan of is death from above. but that's not even on all the versions of the album....and something about it makes me listen to it anyway...i just can't bring myself to skip over any one track on this CD.
One thing mentioned in the initail post here, though....I think changing the production style on MCIS would not have been the best of ideas. yes, zeit is very well produced, but to me the production value on MCIS is way better. not to shoot down zeit, but if we're comparing production value, MCIS takes it hands down.....
but either way....as was already stated, each album is uniquely good in its own way, and zeit doesn't disappoint at all!!!

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I last visited this site or posted anything on the message board... It's good to be back though, and I definetely have had my chance to properly listen to zeitgeist.
So: a track-by-track analysis.
1. Doomsday Clock: as everybody else, I immediatly liked this song.
2. 7 Shades of Black: this song was a real surprise for me. Instant favourite.
3. Bleeding the Orchid: Hearing this song live did not really make me a fan. I used to think that it was a little uninspired. But hearing it on the record made me change my mind. It's a really good song, I especially like the quiet part. I also think this song has the best lyrics on the album.
4. That's The Way: I first heard this song on the record, and I thought it was halfway decent, but nothing special really. Lately, however, I noticed that I can't get that chorus out of my head, I just keep humming that melancholic little melody.
5. Tarantula: what can I say... Yeah!!!
6. Starz: Same thing as Bleeding the Orchid: when I heard it live, I thought it was a little weak, but the album version made me realize that there's some depth to it.
7. United States: the first half of the song is amazing. After that, it gets a little boring. A heavy song doesn't make good rockin'.
8. Neverlost: One of my favourites. The problem is, before the album came out, people were saying things like "neverlost is an instant pumpkins classic" or "neverlost is a hit", so it gave people (who hadn't heard the song yet) that it would be a real classic hit song like Disarm or Tonight, Tonight. Neverlost is nothing like that. BUT it's a song that grows on you, and it's a song that I keep playing over and over again. It's terrific. I just know that I won't get bored of this one.
9. Bring the Light: Another great surprise. I would have never thought to hear something like this on a smashing pumpkins album, but it's great!! This is my favourite song off zeitgeist I think. Heavy, poppy, cool, ... this song is awesome. btw, the production (especially in the 2nd verse) reminds me of SIYL.
10. Come On (Let's Go): I (kinda) like this song, but it doesn't do me much. I know it's NOT one of the weaker songs on the album, it's just nothing for me (I don't know why).
11. For God & Country: wow, er... well, that's not an easy song. The live version was one of my favourite amongst the new songs. The album version is definetly less accessible. But it has grown on me, that's for sure. I don't think it's a song that I will still be playing ten years from now, but hey, that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy it right now!
12. Pomp & Circumstances: I understand that some people don't like this song, but I don't understand that critics don't like it. I mean, it sounds really original, imo. It's totally different from everything I've ever heard. Plus, it's a melody that sticks in your head. It won't let me go. It's a superb song, if you ask me. Only the production could have been better (but I've learned to look beyond that).
My overall impression on zeitgeist is: it is, in many ways, exactly like I expected it to be, and yet surprising and fresh. The overall sound is exactly like I thought it would be. It is, just like I knew it would be, nothing special, just a good album. And I won't say that it doesn't beat MCIS or SD, because anyone who thought that it would, is a moron (sorry if I have hereby offended some). Conclusion: I am completely satisfied with zeit. I did not expect anything more or less than this. Woohoo!! They did it (again)!

When I first heard the album, a lot of other people had heard it. And at first there were a lot of people who I talked to that didn't like it and so when I heard it I automatically felt like I'd hate it, but I was pretty much wrong.
Doomsday Clock- One of the catchiest songs on the album, I liked it as soon as I heard it. I sat through the better half of the credits seeing Transformers to hear this.
7 Shades of Black- I enjoy this song and I did when I first heard it, except it took me a while for the vocals to grow on me in this song.
Bleeding The Orchid- My opinion's kind of the same as Joene in that I didn't like this song instantly when I heard it live from the bootlegs, but the studio version grew on me quickly.
That's The Way- It's a good song but it didn't blow my mind. But I still find myself enjoying it when it plays.
Tarantula- This song blew me away when it first came out, and it still does. Everything about it is great. My band is covering it already. I don't care what anyone says, the video for it rocks as well.
Starz- I really like Starz once I get into it, it doesn't instantly grab my attention, but when I do get into it I can't bring myself to skip it.
United States- My favourite song on the album. It's just long and heavy and awesome. At first I thought it wasn't quite as good as the live version of it but I just appreciate it more now that I've given Zeitgeist more of a chance.
Neverlost- Isn't a bad song, but for some reason I can't quite get into it, but that's just me.
Bring The Light- Bring The Light also jumped out at me, I warmed up to this song pretty quickly.
Come On (Lets Go)- I kind of feel the same away about this as I do about That's The Way, it's not bad but it doesn't hold my attention all the way through.
For God and Country- I'm one of the people that prefer the acoustic version. The album version isn't bad but I just prefer it acoustic.
Pomp + Circumstances- This took me a few listens to really like but I now think it's a great song and even better as a closer.
Basically, I liked the album when I first heard it, but I've only grown to love it more as time's gone by. Great. Album.

Doomsday Clock- Great fucking song!!!!
7 Shades of Black- i totally love this song.....catchy bits oviously his vocals.
Bleeding The Orchid- they so need a billy corgan choir to do the intro live!!!!! but another great song
That's The Way- personally i think this song is going to go off live, especially in the solo.....like so few notes...but so powerful!!!
Tarantula- first single,,,,,not one of my favourites but yes i still do dig it!!
Starz- another song i hated at the beginning!!! but!!!!!!!!!!!! this is in my top 3..u think its going to be shit at the beginning,,but after the metal!!! u know whats coming babY!!!!! GREAT SONG!@!!
United States- this song is like one big CLIMAX!!! the live version compensates it well.....except they dont do the echoes......ummmm...favourite bits in this album are the drums....and the echoes!!
Neverlost- the background harmonies.....my god...listening to this song totally wacked out.......WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!
Bring The Light- top 3!!!! omg.////////so erie keyboard mixed perfecrtly in the intro...........GREAT FUCKING HARMONIZED SOLO!!!! in fact this solo has to be one of the more "standout" corgan solos!!!

I was all over Zeitgeist, then took a break for a couple of weeks, and have now come back to it with fresh ears...here's my highlights:
Bleeding the Orchid - This was the only song I snuck a listen to before the album came out (other than tarantula and doomsday, obviously), and I LOVED it then. It's still one of my favourites, though I miss Ginger and Lisa's backing vocals. You know, the "ah, ah, ah" part?
Neverlost - I really love this song. To me it has a really laid back feel, even though it does get kinda heavy. Jimmy's drumming MAKES this song.
Bring the Light - I'm totally in love with this song. Love the opening. Love the chorus, love the riff. I'm even in love with the combo of neverlost + this; they go great together.
For God and Country - this bass line is totally owning me right now. This song is like TFE should have been. (read: Awesome).
P&C - I think this is a great finishing song. It's really touching, I like. Also, the guitar solo totally says "get ready, we're just getting started..."
