More unknown Pumpkins demo tapes uncovered 1 Year, 3 Months ago
|

As you may or may not know, the Library Of Congress in Washington DC lists a lot of information about registered music, amongst millions of other things. LOC is, if I'm right, the largest library in the world. The Quiet, and 20 Other Songs tape (that is being leaked now as we speak) for example is registered there. Billy Corgan registers his demo tapes and other things there to protect his music and other creative outings. A lot of that information is not in the public domain. However, 1 of our contributors managed to go beyond that and came up with a full list of Pumpkins related registrations. Last night we uploaded them on SPfreaks.
Go to http://www.spfreaks.com/Default.aspx?page=COLLINDEX&cat=1 and put Type Of Release to "Library Of Congress entry", click the Apply Filter button and be amazed by several tapes that nobody has ever seen, probably loaded with lots of music nobody has ever heard. Unfortunately we can not provide tracklists etc. yet. If any of you can provide information about them, or relate them to leaked or otherwise known stuff, please inform us on this board.
Thanks,
Arthur

Naahh, not completely true I'm afraid. I'm not asking for the leaked tracks itself, as we have our sources for that already. And we are only with 4 people over there to keep track of all the news, so we do miss out here and there. For example, from 2 different sides we got emails today saying that some tapes (the ones registered in 1995, but referring back to 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 & 1994) are maybe the Mashed Potatoes tracks, registered after MP got stolen from D'Arcy. Though very speculative information, it makes sense and is food for further research. This is the kinda information we are asking for on this board! Thanks!

MP FAQ http://pumpkins.webz.cz/faqs/mashed_potatoes_faq.txt
including Darcy's stolen copy and Coyle Tape (which is what I think you are referring to above)
yeah, and they said that after MP got stolen from D'Arcy, Billy wanted to protect the songs on it, probably made 1 tape per year (so it will be MP somehow with a completely different running order, and spread over 7 cassettes instead of 5 cd's, which leaves room for extra songs, and Billy is very wellknown for filling up tapes till there is no space left anymore...) and brought them to LOC to register them. VERY speculative, but interesting thought.
Another entry on LOC from 1989 is called "Brain tripping--mind dripping" and it says "music, lyrics, performance, recording: William Patrick Corgan.". This one is extremely tempting! What can it be?

A moderator over at netphoria said that the "Brian tripping mind dripping" tape was just an alternate title for the self-titled demo tape. I don't know if that is true or not. There's not much info about this one.

Also someone says Billy was doing a 1 hour or so Nothing Ever Changes thingy, that's in the Jesse Miller info: "The original Nothing Ever Changes was about 60 minutes in length and was Billy's first attempt at a full-length album; it contained a combination of songs, spoken word selections (recalled as "bad poetry" , and instrumentals." Does it make sense to relate this to Brain tripping? As on no other LOC entry they specifically say "music, lyrics, performance and recording", normally they only say music or music & writing... Being very speculative here...

That's cool and all, but it's not newsworthy. The LOC site has had a search feature for years; all you did was copy & paste the search results onto your site. It's annoying that you keeping making it sound like you're "uncovering" things.

Yeah, I read this when it was posted on Netphoria a few weeks ago. If you seriously want to find out about this stuff, I encourage you to do some searching on there - it'll save you a lot of time.

"Brain Tripping Mind Dripping" is listed in the LOC as an alternate title for a 1989 tape with the title "The Smashing Pumpkins". So it's generally accepted to be an alternate title for the self-titled tape we know about from 1989. Anything's possible, but the 4-track version of NEC was definitely from '88. I'd guess the 60 min version of NEC (if it exists) is from '88 as well.
As for the "music, lyrics, performance and recording" thing - I've registered stuff with the LOC, and they just copy whatever you write in that spot on the form. So it just means Billy wrote different things on the form for different tapes. It's probably not very significant. Although, when I registered something, I gave my drummer credit. 8)

Maybe not to you, as you seem to be a long-time "insider" or at least reading every corner of the internet for years. Not everybody is like that, and when already 2 webmasters of wellknown Smashing Pumpkins websites emailed me personally that they are very happy that I bring this news, and make this info available in a very detailed and more user-friendly format on SPfreaks, then at least I know it's news and being appreciated. And have you actually tried that search engine on LOC and did it give back this very exact information? I did try, but maybe it doesn't work from the EU? The guy sending us all this info (he's from the US) told us he had to use a trick to get this info, because to him it also wasn't available in the public domain.

Yeah, you are right somehow here. I should. 2 of the other SPfreaks teammembers do (re)search on Netphoria, but I'm personally kinda overwhelmed by the negativity and utter nonsense over there, so it's not 1 of my favourite places... Asking about it just works faster for me.

Cool, you're in a band! Tell me more about that some other time (would love to hear some MP3's if you have, I'm always interested in discovering new bands)! But that's indeed pretty nice info then, knowing that they just copy whatever you write. Also the other info about the selftitled tape makes sense, however it's the other way around, The Smashing Pumpkins seems to be the alternate title. It states on LOC:
TITL: Brain tripping--mind dripping.
PHYS: sound cassette.
NOTE: Cataloged from appl. Additional ti.: The Smashing pumpkins.
Makes you wonder anyhow why the name Brain Tripping Mind Dripping never made it to the public on that tape or any tape...
Thanks again Smiley! Please know that I posted a big compliment to you on our board a while back.

Actually, I like that you're making it available in an easier to access format. But it's totally in the public domain - if you can't find it on the LOC, it's because you're not searching correctly. Most of it is under Corgan, William. Some of it is under Billy or Bill or William P. or even William F. Corgan. If I recall, the stuff he did with Courtney has the wrong middle initial, and the stuff he did with Ric Ocasek has the wrong birth year. I guess they don't know him as well as we do. Anyway it has all been on there for years, but I'll admit that it's not easy to navigate.

Hey, don't feel bad - I'm a moderator over there and I hate it, too. I guess that's why I'm here. But it's worth it to put up with the attitude for the wealth of information to be found there.

Yeah, my understanding is that they get so many submissions every day that they just copy whatever you write and move on to the next one. Theoretically the tapes should never get listened to unless a copyright conflict is brought to court or something. Anyway, my stuff is at projectargus.com if you'd like to hear.

Oh, my bad. But yeah... you know, that phrase is a lyric from Honeyspider (distorted version) - which isn't on the tape. It's sort of like how at the beginning of Bury Me, Billy quotes a phrase from the song "Over You", which didn't make it onto Gish. Now that I think about it, I've done the same thing with the name of one of my own CD's - named it after a song that's not on it.

Hey, it's all good... if I have an attitude sometimes, it's just the Netphoria in me. Bottom line - more fan sites are always a good thing.
