I don't think that the Smashing Pumpkins will ever be as big as they were in the MCIS era (very few 'older' bands are), although there could be a big revival in commercial popularity on the cards. Once they recover from the 'Bonus tracks/Multiple editions' debacle then they should regain ground quickly, provided the singles do well.

I, for one, hope that they won't regain their MCIS-era popularity, that would do them no good, simply because they wouldn't deserve that kind of succes anymore. Let's be honest. Zeitgeist is great, but if they would become as popular as in 1995 (which means insanely popular), all the critics would just get pissed and dislike the "new pumpkins" (just because they would be very commercial in that case, without really deserving it), ruining the fun for others. Well, anyway, that's my opinion.

Who's right is it to say when a band deserves success and when they don't, honestly?

Isn't the right time for them to be as popular as they were with MCIS, because of the public especially, we're talking about people who listen to the crapiest bands and awful untalented singers people who are responsable for the success of those bands which brought the music to the state that it is today... it just can't happen not with this lame music in the mainstream, for them to be in a great position of being popular like they were back in 94-96 they need the right public, the right artistic environment and that i think won't be happening any time soon so we won't see MCIS phenomenon again, and all this without analysing the band itself which is another reason why they won't be hugely popular again

Not mine, in any case. But the critics think they have that right.

Weeel, Jupiter's Lament, I'm not so sure of your analysis. Because there's ALWAYS going to be crappy mainstream music. There always has been. But if you look at the Billboard charts from this year, there's probably more hope in 2007 for an artistic explosion than any time this century so far. We had among others Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Interpol and The Shins all gain top 5 albums (and let us not forget Zeitgeist debuted at No. 2. That's nothing to snort at!)

SP won't ever regain their MCIS popularity because they will never write another MCIS. And that's okay. They've had their taste of ubiquity and now they're bringing back for the old-school fans as well as a whole new generation, even though SP's slice of the popularity pie isn't as massive as before.
