I'm making mine now. So we can't use ANY video footage that wasn't included in the tarantula download, unless we first check with the maker of the video or image to see if it's ok? What if the director/producer of the movie clips I want to include is dead? What if I found the clips on youtube?

the way I read the rules, you have to have the copyright yourself, or have the expressed permission from the person who owns the copyright in order to use it. if it's not copyrighted material (i.e. a video that was shot by joe blow but never copyrighted for anything) you have to either be joe blow, or have his permission to use it. so in other words, if the director/producer is dead, and you can't get permission from somebody who is working on his behalf, don't use it. and if you found it on youtube, make sure you have the permission of the person who uploaded it. otherwise, your entry will probably be disqualified from the competition.

What I did for my vid was just use graphics that i made myself to stick behind them, so i didn't have to worry about the copyright thing. There are already some awesome vids out there, ones that would even give Murder a run for his money! : ) There is one in particular that is in all black and white, with some cool landscape shots, that im assuming, the director either shot himself, or got off the internet in some way.

just wait till mine gets done. i'm not talking about what i'm doing...don't want to spill my surprise before it's done....and sure, i'm biased, but i haven't seen one yet that's quite like what i'm working on. i think and will approve!

A question for you guys that made your videos...

I just finished mine, and included footage of a few actors. So if we do this we need to get permission from the actors or someone who handles their business, and then do we have to state this in sort of a disclaimer at the beginning or end of our video?

After reading the rules I think this is what it says but they are complicated.

Yeah, if you do have actors, then they should sign release forms of some kind, and at the end of your video, definitely add some kind of credit page, or disclaimer, stating something to the effect that all actors appearing in the video (except for the ones provided for us via the footage) have given permission to release their image to the public. And if anyone gives you crap, then you can show them the release forms. You should be all good after that. (I work at a TV station, and I occasionally have to deal with release forms and whatnot...)

Just a note to all those who have made and are working on Tarantula videos: be extremely careful what footage you use that is non-SP related.

I found an old movie trailer from the 1950's movie "Tarantula" I wanted to cut and put in my video.

Turns out this video was made by Universal-International pictures, now known as Universal Pictures. I emailed them to see what it would take to get the rights to use this clip, and they said it would cost a lot of money even for that, so it's not worth using in a contest video.

So if I had used it in the video without checking first, and they found out, I could have been sued or whatever it is they do.

Yes. I even made the video. I used the opening for the tarantula trailer as the opening for my video and it looked cool, but I scrapped the whole thing because I'm not going to pay more to make the video than the prize costs itself.
