MCIS = very diverse, very influential.. but not my favorite.

In terms of sheer guitar tone, SD is the best.

I really don't think that Mellon Collie defines a decade or anything but I think it does exceed anything else written in the 90's. It attracted the right crowd of people. I believe it's a far better album than Nevermind. Sure Nevermind was catchy but I think Mellon Collie was more diverse, creative, bold, strong and untouchable when it comes down to it. It was a big risk and it paid off. I think they are capable to write another album as good or better. But the big problem is all their future work will be compared to Mellon Collie where Mellon Collie never had an album to be compared to.

Well, whereas MCIS may not have defined a generation, it certainly has very 90s aspects to it: the self-depricating "loser" notions (jukebox fuckups, 1979 being all about not caring and celebrating apathy, even Billy's antihero Zero shirt).

Exactly! I feel the same way about music today. It's as if there was a wall between the 90's and 2000 seperating the good music with the bad music.

Unfortunately, I was only 8 when the 90's ended, so I pretty much grew up with music of today. Luckily, my dad got me into really good music from the 90's and earlier. For example, when I was about 3 years old MCIS came out. My dad listened to it with me all the time so i think it was kindof forced into my brain. Anyway, I guess I know better than alot of the kids my age who listen to Rap and other cruddy types of music. I can't stand that stuff. Hopefully music gets better

you fifteen too? it sucks. all my friends listen to terrible music except the few i've managed to get into the pumpkins haha. and my father couldn't help me, for his favorite artist is bob wills and his texas playboys. yuck.

if we're just talking about an album defining the band, then yes, these are all good examples.

however, my original point was that in terms of the songwriting, the musicianship, and the pure musical talent exemplified within the album itself, MCIS stands far and above everything else that came out of an amazing era in music.

all these examples are great albums...albums that are far better than the vast majority of stuff that's come out since them. but if you think about MCIS and the fact that 50 some odd songs were involved in the writing and recording process, and that every single one of them is just absolutely amazingly good, I don't think anything can touch it.

Personally I never got into RHCP but it was an album that literally every person liked and the style blended in with the other behemoths of the 90's. Mellon Collie stands alone. It's timeless. You could release that album in the 70's and it would've gotten a good reception in my opinion. It broke throught the doors that all the other bands were too scared to step through. And no band has stepped through it in that decade. But I don't think it defined what the 90's were, it defined what the 90's were capable of but the "artists" in the other bands were a little too worried about failing.

I would mostly agree with you on this. the thing about music is, everybody has their own personal album that "defines" the decade of the 90's....it's not a subjective thing.

remember, my original statement was: "Mellon Collie is the pinnacle of music from the 1990's. I can't think of one album from anybody between 1990 and 2000 that was better. It's absolutley timeless, and amazes me still to this day."

I didn't say it defined or didn't define the 1990's. I said it was the BEST album that came out of that decade.
