And suddenly, I'm back in 7th grade again! Thanks for posting that video. The band seemed so jovial back then. Now Billy's just a damn curmudgeon, haha.

As far as music today is concerned, it's easy to find great albums being made. You just have to look for it. Luckily this is also the generation of the internet, so you can seek out new music by other means than word-of-mouth and MTV. Mainstream music today is complicated because everyone who resents the idea of it will hardly give it a chance.
I too sometimes wish my generation (I'm 20 years old now and think the grunge-1996 era was amazing) had bands like the Pumpkins on MTV every day as opposed to 50 Cent or Linkin Park. However, the fact that this is what's on MTV these days makes it more "special" or "unique" to be a Pumpkins fan, and I like that. Most of my friends don't like/haven't listened to SP. And while it would be cool to have a group of friends who are all into this music, at the same time it's neat to know I'm the only person I know who: 1) Owns a copy (much less 2) of Zeitgeist and 2) Appreciates the beauty of Billy's music. You know how sometimes you'll see a movie the week it opens and love it. Then a month later everyone's seen it and everyone loves it and are talking about it, and all the sudden...you don't like it as much anymore. Same principle here. And if I'm being entirely honest, if I had to choose one musical generation to grow up in other than the current one, it would definitely be between the years 1965-1975.
As a sidenote, some people on here are saying they don't like rap. I understand where you're coming from. A lot of mainstream rappers/hip-hop artists, on the surface, are unappealing and uninteresting...especially to the teenage angst crowd. However, have a more open mind about it. Listen to T.I.'s album "King." Just listen to it. You don't have to blare it from your car while driving 2 mph through a shopping mall with the windows down. Just listen to the beat, lyrics, rhythm. Listen to "What You Know" and tell me you don't get a LITTLE BIT jacked up for something. Have an open mind. You could also try early rap. Dr. Dre would be a place to start. Or if you're just not into mainstream, look these artists up: Louis Logic, Aesop Rock, MF Doom, Danger Doom (includes MF Doom). Perhaps these might be more up your alley. You CAN find good rap music that may not be as good and pleasing as The Pumpkins but may actually be enjoyable. (P.S. anyone who says rappers aren't talented because all they do is talk to a beat is getting stabbed in the eye).

Cheers, Corgasm. Loved your post.
Great music IS out there, kiddies. And reversely, bad music has always existed in the mainstream as well. Music DOESN'T suck any more than it did 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, 100 years ago. You just have to explore beyond your comfort zones to find it! And when you find it, it'll be magic.

Zeitgeist is great.. any hoo
Was 15 when MCIS was realeased (dam!!) 29 now (but dont feel too old, lol)there was so much great music round then from the US and UK (where im from) in the 90's but for me MCIS was all those great things people had said, really ambitious and and acomplished.
In the UK however as I saw it-
Americian Alt rock was never quite as popular as brit pop over here (you had people and really loved music buying alt rock records and you had the mainstream and people who really loved music buying brit pop-if that makes sense).
Pumpkins were never Oasis big , just as Oasis were never Pumkins big in the states.

Thats it! I listen to the odd bit of rap/hip hop, the problem is the mainstream now on the whole is awful! but hey look under the suface and sometimes to the older music and you can be pleasently suprised.

Thats true.I guess what I ment is basicly what you just said. There is still good stuff out there. However, if we were to take the music that seems to be popular (as in played on MTV or the radio) it pretty much defines the decade of '00, which in my opinion isn't very good.
All of my friends hate Smashing Pumpkins, I don't understand it. But your right. For me, only being 15, it's always cool when an adult who grew up through the 90's asks me what kind bands I listen to. Expecting a responce like 50 Cent or whatever other lame bands their are today, I say "Smashing Pumpkins" and other 90s bands, and they're quite impressed.
You know how sometimes you'll see a movie the week it opens and love it. Then a month later everyone's seen it and everyone loves it and are talking about it, and all the sudden...you don't like it as much anymore.
Actually, it's the exact opposite with me. When I see a movie and love it, I always like it when other people start seeing it so I can discuss it with them. However, when there are movies that I havn't seen where people are like "Oh, hahahaha, remember that one part!" "oh yeah, hahahah." It makes me not want to see it. For example, I havn't seen 300 yet. However, the more I hear people talking about it, the less I want to see it. Infact, I've heard so many people talk about it that it's to the point where I couldn't care less if I ever see it or not.
However, have a more open mind about it
No, sorry. I hate rap and I will never listen to it. The only good rap is the Beastie Boys. Other than that, it all sucks.

The thing that irritates me about the modern music scene is that its not about the album as a whole anymore. No one cares about the collective art work that is an album, people are simply isolating the singles and only caring about that. With the internet explosion, people just download a few individual tracks.
I used to talk to people at school and there was this kid who i found out realy liked the cure, i was excited and went to discuss it with him, only to find he was one of the people who download 3 songs and call themselves a fan. He couldnt even name 1 album when i asked him his favourite.

You're totally right!
I hate that.
I hate it when you meet someone and tell them a band your really into. And then they say they love that band and you get excited. And then you ask, "What songs do you listen to?" And then they name a few radio hits and thats it.
By the way I love the Cure (and yes, I'm actually a real fan =])

I love the cure, either them or coheed are my second favourite band, but i wouldnt consider myself a "fan" of either, if you take the word "fan" to mean fanatical. I could only have enough energy for one fanatical devotion at once i think
