Become a writer for sp.com 11 Months ago
Trillian this is for you...

www.smashingpumpkins.com/news_3082

February 12, 2008 - SP.com looking for writers to join staff

Attention members of the Smashing Pumpkins community:

Smashing Pumpkins dot com is looking to recruit 5 more correspondents into the ranks of the Smashing Pumpkins Media Militia. These correspondents will be given the task of writing articles, editorials, critical reviews and posing questions to the fan base. We are looking for inquisitive minds and people who will look past the surface of being a fan and explore the deeper themes of the band past, present and future.

These 5 positions will work directly with the Pumpkins Media Militia on creating suitable content for SP.com. These will be paid positions and should be considered part-time work. There will be weekly deadlines and creative thinking is a must-have. A strong knowledge of the history of The Smashing Pumpkins is a plus.

Applicants must provide resumes and a sample essay/article of 750 words or less.

The essay or article should relate to the band and should made in the hopes of generating discussion amongst the fanbase, as if it were on the site. We are not looking for overtly benevolent praise for the band, critical thought and scrutiny is encouraged.
For those without a strong writing background, some suggestions follow. Variations on these suggestions or anything completely different is encouraged:

- What kind of album would adore have been if Jimmy Chamberlin had played drums on it?

- If Machina had turned out as an actual double LP, how would things have turned out differently, it at all?

- What impact has the 7-seven break-up of the band had on the music world?

- What song if any, stands out the most as an oddity on Siamese Dream and why?

To submit your application for this position you have a user account on smashingpumpkins.com.
Please send a private message to user PumpkinsMediaMilitia on smashingpumpkins.com with the title APPLICATION and your email address in the message portion. An email will be sent to you that you may respond to with your resume and essay in either PDF or text document form.

the media militia has added 2 stipulations:

1. you have to be at least 21 years old.

2. you can reside anywhere in the world, but must be fluent with english (this one seemed understood to me....)

Re:Become a writer for sp.com 11 Months ago
I would do it but I have so much going on between school, Act IV, Landslide (and related sites), helping out the SPIFC, etc.

I have some experience writing articles, as my brother and I used to do our own Netzine on Landslide, but now only do the occasional feature article.

I might be persuaded to submit something considering it is paid work, but I am not sure how that would work in terms of my I-20 status. I am in Chicago for school, and I can't technically work in the US except on campus. But I am from Canada, and they said this open to anyone in the world over 21 and who can speak english. I wonder how they would pay people then.

I am so tempted. There is a small chance that Bjorn Thorsrud will be at a show that I am going to next month, as he is producing a band from South Africa's album (their guitarist was in another band-Ketamine that performed at Act IV). Getting an interview with that guy would a great thing for something like SP.com. But if I get the chance to talk to him even informally, it would be cool. But who knows. Hope for the best, expect the worst .

That 21-year age restriction is grossly unfair - I'm a better music writer at 18 than most twenty-somethings will ever be. That's not ego. That's confidence in the quality of my work.

But, I suppose it can't be helped. Good luck to Trillian or anyone else who would pursue this. Be glad that you don't have me to compete with.

Yeah I haven't got a response back either. Would anyone be interested in reading the rough draft of my article? I tried to address the question regarding the impact of the 7 year break up. A lot of it was focused on explaining that that was impact more so on the fans than the music world, as the music world for the most part started to tune out in the years leading the end.
I briefly mention the mixed reactions to everything in between: Zwan, Billy and Jimmy solo material, and then the reaction to the revival of SP.

I am not completely satisfied with it yet.

Jeffrey, I can appreciate your frustration. And while there is a lot of crap that twenty-somethings right, especially in the popular music magazines, that does not preclude their being people who intend to submit that are your equal or better that over 21 (I am not saying I am one of them, as my first draft is probably not that great). Some people have wisdom beyond their age, others don't.

If you are truly exceptional writer, that's fine, but there a lot of 18 years olds that aren't either. I am not sure if the specific age restriction was to weed out people who didn't have college or university level writing experience. However, the average newspaper aims at writing at a 6th grade level.

Trillian DO IT.

I think the 21 and over is probably for legal purposes.
