Nottingham Gig Cut Short !! 10 Months, 4 Weeks ago
So there I was my first ever Smashing Pumpkins Gig
Billy finishes the Acoustic version of 1979 and just walks off stage.
No goodbye....nothing!

So we got

Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
Behold! the Night Mare
Bring the Light
Tonight, Tonight
Mayonaise
Try, Try, Try
Superchrist
(Come On) Let's Go!
Stellar
Perfect
Lily
The Rose March
Today
Tarantula
Stand Inside Your Love
Ava Adore
Drown
Bullet with Butterfly Wings
1979

And thats it

OK their was a few people in the crowd who wouldnt shut up shouting "Disarm" or "[insert any other old song name here]"
But I would have though Billy could have put them down or just told them to shut up or something.
Instead we get ........ nothing!

I dont blame Billy at all.
The crowd where awful, the support band got a better reponse.

All people came for was the hits and didnt care for the rest.

Damn, that sucks.

I really hope that the crowd in NZ is good, IMO good crowds are half the fun at a concert, gives you a bit more buzz.

It's official.

The Pumpkins have the widest margin between the quality of a band's music and the quality of a band's fans than any other act on the planet.

SP fans can be fucking dicks, sometimes. I'm actually kind of glad that I wasn't there for that show - I would have been mortified.

My friend is a frequent on the message boards for The Secret Machines, she told me that one of the girls saw the pumpkins at that show and wrote something about it on a thread in their general discussion.

"Every fan was let down last night. SHAME ON THEM. What band does not thank their fans or say goodnight? It started strangely, with a bad atmosphere, and ended abruptly... Obviously not where it was supposed to end! Billy finished a beautiful acoustic version of "1979" and he was meant to bring the band back on stage for an encore and never appeared again. Security, fans, roadies, no one knew what was happening and no one budged. Finally after 5 mins a speaker alerted us the band had left! RUDE. And I heard the loudest reaction that had come from the crowd all night..... BOOS! I hope the Pumpkins heard it too."

So another eye witness. (Unless that was you pierowmaniac?)

And Billy always thought the Pumpkins had the greatest fans...in some cases yes, in others not so much

Has anything like this happened before. I seem to remember a bad response from the crowd during one of the UK gigs during the 2000 tour, but I am not sure if the band had walked off in that case.

Of course, there have been several instances where fans shouted out Pumpkins songs names, even during Zwan and his solo shows. I think it was at one of the solo shows where people kept on chanting for Pumpkins songs, and finally Billy got fed up and went on a tirade about it. In that case, it was well deserved.

I remember reading that something similar happened during a tour in support for Machina. Anyone have more information on that one?

Also rumors flying around that Billy was sick that night.

Oh Dear, I'm going to see them in mUnich next week (on thursday, the 21st) and I'm so afraid this short gig wil ahppen once again, because it's not sold out yet! I hope, fans here in Germany are more with the band and bring in a better atmosphere, because I can't imagine that the Nottingham performance sucked!!!

Pumpkins fans are spoiled, I think. They're so used to getting what they want that once they don't, they kick and scream and bitch and moan until they do. It's pathetic.

Not that I'm implying that any poster here would be a reason for Billy to just walk off stage like that, but, to anyone here who is about to attend a future Pumpkins show or at least plans to: shut your mouth, open your ears, and trust that Billy & Co. will deliver. They know what's best for you, even if you don't! Most of the time, anyways.

Not that anyone needs to be told that, I hope.

I think it was a terrible idea for the Pumpkins to play arenas to be honest. Over here (Birmingham), even NIN played the Carling academy which is frickin' tiny. The Pumpkins should go for more small clubs instead of huge venues if they've barely being half full cus then its just embarrassing, then again thats all the band seem to be able to do these days...

So what were the crowd doing that was so bad? Just shouting requests?

Are you kidding, bro???

I exactly know what I want: An entire show on Thursday!
In my opinion, the band is as well to blame as the Nottingham visitors!
The band, because they got paid for doing their job as well as in every '08 gig and the visitors (I can't call them fans) are to blame, because there were many strangers who didn't bring back any kind of emotion to the Pumpkins!
Why were they visiting them, I wanna know?!

I would feel like shit, if Billy would leave earlier in show, I am present...people, IT'S THE SMASHING PUMPKINS and no modern emo-band which will split after two radio hits!!!
I would never ever worship Billy for everything he does, and I haven't done this way (I don't like the new stuff that much for example) but if you are there and Billy plays Porcelina in front of you, for you, I can't understand, why people don't cheer at all!
Thanks!
A review for the Munich gig is coming in my blog on Friday, the 22nd!!!

Well it's not like this has never happened before.

Anyway it's tough to say what happened. People there said the crowd sucked (so they probably did) but if you check out some of the vids from the show on youtube, they were clearly pretty excited too.

Billy did mess up a chord in 1979 though, maybe that just topped off the night for him, he had had enough for one night.

also, this guy is clearly unhappy... but here's video of the crowd after billy left
