Re:The Smashing Pumpkins & Nirvana 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Nirvana put out some good songs in their time, but just like Pearl Jam or anything like that, I just never really got into them.

I got into alternative music pretty late into the game, essentially 1995/1996. The next biggest alternative rock band that I liked was Soundgarden, and even then, they were hit and miss. Superunknown was probably more consistent overall than Down On the Upside, which had amazing singles, and then most of the other songs kind of fell flat for me.

But really after the Pumpkins, the next band that really did it for me was Garbage, which while they have grunge influences, don't really fit into that same mold, through their use of samples, electronic elements, etc.

I got more into Foo Fighters than I did Nirvana. Although up until recently I had cut them out of my listening rotation. After seeing Muchmusic promoting something like 24 hours of Foo Fighters for In Your Honor, I was thinking how much over-hyped it was, and that it was just overkill. So I was so soured by it, that I didn't check out the album. But now that I have, I actually like it, and their newest album as well.

But I digress, sort of.

Keeping the world safe from Foo!

Foo Fighters are hit and miss for me. It seems like they take their career as a joke, and I don't really like that. They do have some good tunes, although lately all Dave does is scream into the microphone in a forced rock voice. The song Let it Die off their new album is pretty good

Foo Fighter aren't really in my top 5 anymore, but I still like them. And I know what you mean about taking their career as a joke at times.

Bands I like more than Foo Fighters currently:
-The Smashing Pumpkins (I wish they would add 'The' back into the cover art )
-Doves
-Ivy
-Garbage
-Fountains of Wayne
-Kill Hannah
-Remy Zero

Doves are shibby, dude.

I bought The Last Broadcast by them cause it was like, $3 in the bargain bin, and my god, it was probably the best bargain I got from a CD. And it was even better because of the fact I'd never heard of the band.

And although my eyes prefer "Smashing Pumpkins" to "The Smashing Pumpkins", I just thought now, that it would be good to see the "The" return to the packaging, because look at how arty the albums with "The" on it compared to the ones without...

On topic more...

Nirvana=good simplicity
SP=good complexity

there's my two cents on the matter

Shibby? I would prefer a return of the "The" as well. It's kind of weird how their myspace music player uses 'The' but the rest of the site doesn't. I sometimes pronounce 'Thee' sounds more dignified lol

Who makes this comparison? I've never met any of these people, and I now have something else to thank the Lord for.

woahhhh, foo fighters are terrible, woosiest band except nickleback and maroon 5.. i do not like them

dave grohl- stick to your drumming only, one of the greatest drummers ever

anywho... thew pumpkins are better in everyway. billy, much better guitarist, kurt was good, except his solos were aweful and are all so simple...look at cherub rock geek usa, then you take smells like teen spirit and you hear a crappy solo.

billy's singing, sweet, angry, comlex growls....kurts singing- annoying whispy growl

billy's lyrics
Sprinkle all my kisses on your head
Stars full of wishes fill our beds
She said, "I'm dead"

<VS>

Kurt's lyrics

Sell the kids for food
weather changes moods
Spring is here again
reproductive glands

i think you see that the pumpkins's lyrics are much better? i hope? sure nirvana was catchy but they were not as good!

I don't think either of those sets of lyrics are very good candidates for comparison. In fact, those lyrics by Billy were pretty awful, and made me cringe. Which song is that?

Kurt's lyrics were "eh", but I love that song.

Ha, Siva is SHVEET, especially to play drums to. Although I can't say that any of Gish's lyrics are anything to yell about really, some of them are good, but not exceptional.

Re:The Smashing Pumpkins & Nirvana 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
you have to agreee that the first verse in siva is cool

I spin off and lose my head
Throwing stray a spark instead
Gather strenghth down in my heel
And dig it in the world I peel

Way down deep within my heart
Lies a soul that's torn apart
Tell me, tell me what your after
I just want to get there faster

its not great but some of the best words on gish

i also chose gish because it came out the same time, and because of the rockband thing

Re:The Smashing Pumpkins & Nirvana 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
maybe they got compared with nirvana because they played also alternative rock and put themselves into the generation x thing. the 90ies had so many great bands and also bands that had impacts. I guess nirvana and the pumpkins were just on top of that subject "making the hardrock, punk and alternative rock commercial".

And having an impact on the music culture scene is not depending on how good you are. it's how you touch people. and even if kurt cobain wasn't a great singer, songwriter or guitar player, he touched the people. end of story.

There are plenty more bands 'woosier' than Foo Fighters. And Nickleback and Maroon 5 are about 100,000 x worse than anything Foo Fighters have ever done
