actually, no that's not how it goes.
the commercial is promting the fact that the new fords have MP3 systems with voice recognition cues so you can just tell your car to play a certain artist. the driver cues smashing pumpkins and that's the way starts. the passenger says play artist tiffany. nothing happens. he says play artist michael bolton, and sure enough bolton starts playing. the driver looks embarassed and panics and tells it to play korn, which it does. then the passenger just shakes his head at the driver and chuckles. it's kind of a funny spot really...they've been running it heavily on NFL games the past couple weeks.

I love that commercial. Whenever there's an ad with a song by one of my favorite bands, I don't think "sell out." I think "AWESOME! Now more people will have good musical taste like me," hehe.

i don't know how an artist sells out by giving there music to a commercial? there musicians there job is to make a living so they can make more art, the only way an artist or band can sell out in my eyeys is by making shitty music.

Fuck! Great point.
All my friends are the traditional indie people who are against "selling out" and I hate that people hate people because they "sell out."
I'll use this argument against them.

I shit my pants when I heard an Eagles of Death Metal song on a commercial. It was awesome. I thought I was the only person in the world who loves them this much. Having the Pumpkins on a major car commercial kinda feels like validation too lol. It's like, HELLLLL YEAH!! Somebody out there has some taste!@

Well, you can remind your cool indie friends that everyone from MIA to the Flaming Lips to the Shins and back have all sold their songs to commercials.
Anyone who thinks that artists benefiting from advertising dollars is "selling out" is daft. With the record industry in the toilet, there's very few other viable ways to make a living as a musician!
I mean, as long as we don't get a barrage of Luvs diaper commercials exploiting the Beatles (THAT darn near killed me,) then it's all gravy.

desperate times makes people do desperate things the biz is in the crapper, you need to make a living somehow i see more pumpkins songs being in commercials being as there going to have to find new ways of making there music available to the world without a record deal.
