I'm glad that many bands are leaving the labels and venturing out on their own. I really hope billy goes in the direction that trent reznor did with the new NIN album. at least in terms of how the product is sold. I'm glad the pumpkins are starting to utilize new technology to their benefit and are evolving. The labels failed to evolve with new technology and are suffering now. They're scared of torrents and file sharing communities so they use the RIAA to scare people into buying their shitty cd's. It's good seeing labels suffer, like I think lil' john's label went bankrupt recently or something.. which I find funny. I actually think that if the pumpkins sell their music for a really good price (like $5 for 36 losless songs >_< they will sell much more than what zeitgeist sold and will make more money off of it without the label shit (which'll keep billy happy).

The only (ONLY) downside to the internet is that some people cannot and will not download or buy via it.

Ah, I want to go to that, but I'm probably not. Have fun!
On topic... when I first read this I was sitting on the fence with the idea. I download some albums (always legally) when I can't be bothered going to buy the hard copy, however I always end up buying the CD as I want to have the 'whole package' e.g. liner notes, artwork etc. I know some albums you buy online you get this, but it's not the same looking at it on screen or your own print out. So I, would more than likely double up! Hell, I bought American Gothic from iTunes and saw it in store today and was tempted to buy it again!
I get the money/label thing and understand completely.
I don't mind if it's in chunks, as long as I don't have to wait a whole year or more for another chunk. If that's the case, album with 10+ songs please.
Ah, maybe I'm still on the fence with this one *sigh*

More from Jimmy on this in the recent blog:

Hello music lovers.
As the tour winds down I would just like to say what a pleasure and an honor it was to play for so many of you. I try to never forget that my job is a sacred privilege. Music, the thing that binds you to me and all of us to the Universe is my light.
Let me also say that this band, The Smashing Pumpkins, will continue to write, record, release, and perform AS LONG AS WE ARE ABLE!
Some of you may have read bits of an interview that was done in confidence by yours truly in which I say that the Pumpkins probably won't record cd's anymore. What I meant by this is this: Although we may not use the "album" or "full length cd" as a format anymore, WE WILL WRITE AND RECORD MUSIC UNTIL WE ARE DEAD!!!!!!!! WE ARE NOT GOING AWAY!!!!!!!!
I could go on about how I was stolen from, violated, lied to by some ignoble journalist, but what's the point?
I choose light.
Love Jimmy.
...sounds like something was taken out of context.

So? What difference does it make? I think he's saying the same thing we all read from that spinner article.

agreed
I think that jimmy thought that WE all thought that this meant there would be no more pumpkins songs.
i know better than that.
it's the no more albums that I'm not happy about.

Ash decided after their last album in 2006 (or was it 2007?) that they were going to just release singles from now on. I presume that means download only, but I'm not sure.
Seems a few bands are doing this now. I really hope their sales suffer so other bands don't follow.
Anyone who prefers their music on CD as an album really shouldn't pay for download-only 'singles'.

THE SMITHS was a good singles band, lots of people agree that their single discography was richer that their album discography... I love their albums too, but my favorite Smiths' record is Louder Than Bombs, which is a single and b-sides compilation (these singles were not included on their albums).
On the other hand, The Smashing Pumpkins used to make perfect albums (I know!, different times and all that). But their singles were just a way to promote their great albums, that's what made us all fall in love with them. Losing that is quite sad... I will like their new songs, I know this because I have faith in Billy Corgan, everything he's done is gold to me. But no more albums is not a good idea... And think about this: if NIN charges 5 dollars for 36 songs, how much will these 'blocks of songs' cost?
note: I don't like NIN.

OK, I just read the Rolling Stone interview... Forget about all I wrote there. An album with 40 SONGS! Wooo!
