All these years people have been scolding the Pumpkins about the re-issues and the Metro DVD (including myself at points), and was all because of Virgin Records. Stupid Virgin.

No, whereas Billy as the creator will always hold intellectual/copyrights over his work, Virgin will still have publishing rights.


Virgin cannot legally within their rights use songs from SP albums in anyway without SP consent... they have the right to continue publishing the albums in the form that they are in.


So I don't think they're going to go after Virgin's publishing rights. They just don't want them mis-using the music.

Yeah, I agree with everything you just said. Maybe I'm not explaining myself well. Obviously he owns the copyrights for his own music. What I ment by "being able to get there music back" was basicly what you said about virgin still holding the publishing rights. In a way, virgin still has control over those songs. So what I ment by getting them back is getting total control themselves.

Yeah Rivers you're totally right with that.

That also being the reason i never would want to sign to a major label, however much money i would get, i would still want full creative and publishing rights for my music.

Whether they just want money or they're trying to save some face, who amongst us can say that we would do any differently, given the situation? The Pumpkins are completely within their rights to expect a cash reward from this. I know I would.

The article says nothing about retrieving the publishing rights to their songs. I'm pretty sure if they were after that as well, it would say so. What happens when Virgin loses publishing rights? They don't publish the old SP albums anymore.

I don't know that they'll want to get the publishing rights back. Sure they could so all sorts of things with the old material, but they'd have to find a new way to get all of the old albums published/distributed again.

I agree, but I think it would be better that Billy have the chance to do what he wants with his music, when he wants, as opposed to waiting for Virgin to say "Nah, we're not interested in doing [insert here]." He could just take his music and put it out how he wants, and I'm sure that the Pumpkins are rich enough to have their own creation/distribution methods.

This article about this particular lawsuit doesn't say that, but BILLY himself does say it in the rolling stone interview. Go back and read it again...they're trying to get everything away from Virgin...

One wonders what Billy plans to do with all that music...I mean, do you really think the band has enough unreleased rarities to release new material from each era?

Of course, I'm sure there are a ton of unreleased songs we don't know about

Jeez, look at how many songs on Mashed Potatoes were unheard of at the time...

As the sound tech told me at their Hordern show thrusday night, they recorded it for archive... imagine just how many live albums they could release having every gig recorded? Let alone the live rarities and covers they've done...
