What's the deal with Library of Congress? 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
from http://www.spfreaks.com/Default.aspx?page=COLLDETAILS&item=1764
1-010 (COHM) ITEM 1 OF 11 IN SET 4
TITL: Machina II : The friends & enemies of modern music.
PHYS: Sound cassette.
NOTE: Collection.
CLNA: Faust's Haus Music
DCRE: 1999
DPUB: 5Sep00
DREG: 15Apr02
APTI: Slow down.
APAU: lyrics & music: William Corgan , 1967-.
ECIF: 3/M
This is the information from a tape that is kept at the Library Of Congress in Washington, DC.
Note from our contributor:
"Not FAEOMM, but actually Machina II on tape. Without hearing it, there's no way of knowing if it's a dub from the acetates or the masters. Note the very specific publication date."
If it's in a library... why can't someone just go in and have a listen to it?
I just don't get it...
There's a few other tapes on that collector's website from the Library of Congress.
Seriously, WHAT'S THE DEAL??

I'm really intersted in that stuff.
Maybe the owners are selfish Corganites...

You can listen to anything in the Library of Congress if you make an appointment. But what's the big deal about this? You already heard Machina II.

I use SPfreaks (an informational site/forum, which focuses on collecting SP memorabilia, etc.). I don't think the webmaster owns or has personally listened to every item listed necessarily. The site is meant to be informative, and other users are welcome to contribute to the catalog of SP material. Whoever contributed the information about this tape was probably just trying to be clear about what info they have and don't have on the tape. Its a collector site, so they were simply specifying what they could about the item and the source of the recording. The SPfreaks entry is not meant to suggest that the Library of Congress has some conspiracy going to keep SP music from the public. I'm sure they could care less.

I use to make fun of spfreaks, but they've got their shit together. It's slightly hard to navigate and I can never find "exactly" what I'm looking for, but I usually run into something else thats interesting.
I seem to remember the LOC having a lot of BC/SP stuff in their catalogue...I could be mistaken though.

Well, ok, that explains a lot then, what I meant was that I was wondering why no-one knew if it was from the master tapes or acetate (whatever that is), meaning a high-quality recording.
If it's just from the mp3s that are on the internet, that wouldn't be such a good recording, especially since it went from vinyl>computer>mp3>tape.

I suppose, since you have to listen to to it in a room with other people there.

Erm, if MACHINA II and Quiet and other songs are copyrighted, then how come we can share them on the internet?

Several years ago, some guy 'borrowed' Quiet and Other Songs from the Library of Congress, made a copy and somehow managed to slip it back without anyone noticing. It wasn't leaked for years because of this. I didn't even realized it had been fully leaked until last week. I always thought it was just a couple of things, because there was that one person on Netphoria trying to force people to leak the Adore era version of "Let Me Give the World To You" even though it is pretty clear that only Billy Corgan has a copy of that.

Billy at least approves of the sharing of Machina II. He released the first bootlegs himself.
