Er, I wouldn't say 99%...
D'arcy's bass playing was a bit shit to start with, as you can hear in some demos, but she got better and better.
It's ok for me to say that she was shit too, because Billy thought the same when she auditioned for SP.

Well what would be the point of having D'arcy in the studio at all then?
If billy recorded all bass, that makes D'arcy as redundant as Ginger.
As in, she's only needed on the tours, or when they perform.

Well, besides being part of the whole Pumpkins-Impression (which actually was destroyed after D'arcy quit the band), I think D'arcy actually was the best one, because the others didn't even have to do anything with the band(I think there aren't even any takes with Melissa/Ginger playing the bass).
They were just (and still are) paid live musicians which support Corgan's vision without any personal influences.
For that reason, D'arcy maybe hadn't the technique of Melissa as a live artist, but her playing helped to form that what we call The Smashing Pumpkins until the end of the 90s!
(OK, for me, other people than Billy, Jimmy , James and D'arcy are not guilty members of the band and will never become!!!)

you know it wasn't til after I made this topic that it hit me, it WAS Billy that recorded 99% of all the bass lines. I guess I never really grasped that, because I always thought D'arcy looked so cool, and Melissa, even though I know she is talented, seemed to not have the stamina to keep up with Billy. A friend of mine used to brag on Paz (sorry she was in Zwan of course)I always disagreed, until we seen her play live with Zwan, and then hahahaha there was no more | | |
