I'm with the others who are kinda interested to see what exactly this turns out to be, but not that excited as we probably have 99% if not all of this stuff anyway. And as most of it is demos, even on CD the quality probably won't be amazing. But still, I'll wait and see and almost certainly get it

You know, if it really is a compilation of Mashed Potatoes, Reel Time, etc finally in high-quality CD form...it makes me think.

Perhaps a proper CD re-release of Machina II is in order sometime in the future? Seems like Billy wants to get everything out in the open, and making Machina II more easily attainable could be one of those things.

Does this mean they won that lawsuit over Virgin. Sorry, I kind of lost track of that whole thing...??

yeah, Shame, i wonder about the lawsuit thing too, as i haven't heard anything more on it.

i also agree about the Zeitgeist demos- now i really want those.

this set probably is just stuff i have, although there are a few pre-Gish tracks that have poor enough audio quality that i would really like to get something with maybe better audio for the songs.

Maybe this will be released under the Virgin name. I don't know how this all works, but I would think they have the rights to Gish.

Speaking of legal matters, I wonder how Darcy and James will be paid for this new release. You know they're entitled to something.

Speaking of Machina II, I think it's unlikely that will be released properly. I quite like the way it was released, through word-of-mouth of the hardcore fans. If it was released properly, then the hordes of casual fans would think "Eh? What the fook is up with this shite? I don't get what this is all about?"

It'd be even worse if they released Machina II with singles. "Hey, have you heard that NEW Smashing Pumpkins song?"

Speaking of royalties, I'm sure there won't be any more awkwardness now as there has been about it, they have played Mayonaise at their recent concerts, among others that are credited to Iha. Or is it the only song?

I think Iha shares co-writing credits on I Am One and Soma as well.

Man, I got a big idea last night:
What, if the Gish-boxset is just the beginning of re-releasing the Pumpkins whole backing catalouge, finishing with a proper and official release of MACHINA II and maybe the Final Metro DVD???
Seems, like I'm just dreaming, but that would be heaven's gift...

Pretty awesome news. I would be willing to bet there will be at least one track that none of us have heard that's been hiding away all these years.

I read an article a few weeks ago about how record labels are rereleasing albums as "limited editions" with bonus tracks, new material, etc. Since no one is buying albums anymore, it's sort of a last ditch effort for the record companies to squeeze money out of the demographic they know they can manipulate...the fans who already own and love the album. At first I disregarded the article, but then I looked around on iTunes and Amazon, and you wouldn't believe how many of these "limited edition" albums are popping up. From what I understand, the labels are forcing artists into these rereleases, going as far are pushing them into the studio for new material and using old demos to tag onto the album. That got me thinking about the numerous Zeitgeist releases, and now this new Pre-Gish/Gish boxset. I’m not saying this is going on with the Pumpkins, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Uh, dark news!
But I think, Billy already promised us Special Editions of every album, didn't he?
And the Gish-Box seems to be a very big Special Edition in my opinion.
On the other hand, (tough Gish IS a brilliant album) maybe Virgin is trying to focus Pumpins-Noobies on Gish which they maybe wouldn't buy (because of Gish being so super-underrated) with the help of this new release; so they can make more money with that "old album".
The same way, it happened with Nirvana's Bleach, for example, they put an oversize sticker on the frontcover, saying "THIS IS NIRVANA'S FIRST ALBUM", to make "Smells like teenspirit teenies" who actually just bought (or downloaded) the best of album nevermind, this album, too.

They're free of any label obligations. No label, not even Virgin, has any right to tell them they have to re-release something.

That's why I think there will be at least something previously unreleased on this thing.

Yes, but Gish still bares the Virgin name. Unless the Pumpkins won/bought back their entire catalog, I would think Virgin still has some sort of interest in Gish, but not the Pumpkins name. I'm not much for legal matters, so I'm not sure what the outcome actually is. I guess we'll see when the boxset comes out. Someone has to pay to create/distribuite/finance this...
