no he cant, on vieuphoria, they did slunk live in japan and the interviewers asked could he speak japanese, billy answered the question for him "no"

i remember that interview and im an aussie. they ask him if he speaks japanese and he looks at them funny and says that he's second generation... my ex had a heap of pumpkins stuff though that no one here had at the time. he's a bit of a freak, even has billy guest programming rage on disc that a ozphoria friend sent him but it has all the songs cut out! haha so it just has all these random musing from billy about songs and people and then no clip. weiiird

James can speak japanese. I have a live performance of the in Japan and he's talking to the crowd - translating what Billy says. I don't know if he speaks fluently but he can speak the language.

I'm not sure if he can or not, but since he is American born, I've always assumed he didn't speak it, at least not fluently.

Maybe he's taken the time to learn some Japanese since the beginning of the band. If so, that'd be really cool.

Thats exactly what I thought too...

Oh, and also...from the Wikipedia site about James, I found this...

Iha also collaborated on two tracks with Japanese musician Chara for her 2001 album MADRIGAL. The tracks are called "Boku ni Utsushite" (????????and "Skirt" (????).

He can speak Japanese. He designs clothes for a Japanase company and there is a link to a Japanese site that may be run by James in the liner notes for a soundtrack to a Japanese film he did music for last year.
