Question for the newer fans. 1 Month ago
The 15th anniversary of SD got me to thinking about how some folks on here were in kindergarten, still in diapers, or not even born yet when that album came out. So, to all of you who didn't get turned onto the Pumpkins until after the "final show" in 2000, what turned you on to them? Was it the reunion? Or did you discover them during the 7 year hiatus?

....and discuss.

I discovered them thanks to a book my dad got for Christmas a few years ago (2005 or 2006, I can't remember) entitled 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Two of the albums were Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie.

I had heard of Smashing Pumpkins, but I didn't realise they were this important. Suddenly I started hearing them on the radio a lot more often.

I borrowed Siamese Dream from the local town library, because I remember seeing it there before. Life has never been the same since..

I got into them during the 7 Year Hiatus. It was in 2006 I believe, and I was nearing the end of my junior year in high school. I can't really remember why I chose to check them out, I think it was because I was always hearing the band name and was interested to see what they actually sounded like. So I started listening to the singles like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", "Zero", and "Disarm". It didn't take long for me to get hooked. I liked the fact that I got into them when I did, because it was exciting to live the excitement of the band coming back with the old fans. And I'll always remember sneaking out of my house on Black Friday to go get MACHINA when no one was home. (And it turned out to be my favorite album by the Pumpkins.)

I started liking them when MCIS came out (well, a bit after it came out), but I didn't really follow them after that and didn't know about SD, Gish or the Machinas. I eventually rediscovered them during the 7 year hiatus, by searching on the internet about them to find out more, and then downloaded most of their songs, and eventually bought all their major releases (as well as the TAFH boxset off ebay).

I've been wanting to buy the greatest hits with judas O but don't think they sell it with the bonus disc anymore, as well as the songs I don't have off their rarities and b-sides, but it's not available on my iTunes store (probably because they only sell it on the American iTunes store or something ).

You can probably find it in those stores that have a "second hand" section. I found mine in a store called Real Groovy. You wouldn't think that it was second hand, it looked brand spanking new.

In fact, I also got Adore from Real Groovy second hand. It looked... definitely not second hand.

My brother let me borrow Adore by the Pumpkins and What's the Story Morning Glory by Oasis, back in 6th grade... Those two albums battled it out in my CD player until SP came out ahead, and I ended up getting Siamese Dream a year or so later. I got Mellon Collie from a library, and my dad bought me Machina. I had pretty much heard all of there stuff by 2003. I've been a huge fan ever since!

The MACHINA's have deeper meanings to me personally.

you can get the greatest hits with Judas O off of ebay and other mp3 stores have rarities and b-sides- regular mp3's do work with i-tunes right?

While I was indeed in diapers when Siamese Dream hit shelves, I wouldn't consider myself a "new fan"
Because from as far back as I can remember I have listened to SP.
My parents were playing it all the time

I discovered them in fall '02 while watching the Pumpkins-parody on Simpsons.
In this episode, Zero was played and I thought the song was quite cool, so I lent MCIS from our library...after that Adore...then I bought Pisces and Gish....
And I became a big fan of The Smashing pumpkins while buying all their clasic releases!

I got into the Pumpkins in 2005 I think it was, I was only 15 but I had heard OF them, and I had seen the episode of The Simpsons with them in it. But that's about all I knew until that point.
I think the first song I heard was actually Where Boys Fear to Tread. I think I heard it play at a local concert or a bar or something. I really enjoyed the song so I went home and started downloading other Pumpkins songs. Eventually I bought Mellon Collie and pretty much fell in love. From that point I've been addicted.

I got into em during the 7 year hiatus, sometime around 2004. I was on my way to go camping with my friends in one of their dad's 4WD and they put on Rotten Apples. 1979 then became our official camping song

and then i went and got a copy of rotten apples, then Pisces, gish and earphoria, Machina I, Adore, Mellon Collie and last of all Siamese Dream (i think lol) but yeah i loved em since first hearing them. That would have been back in Year 8 i suppose...

Even if you dont see the bonus disc advertised on places Like Ebay (as sugested above) always ask the question of the seller.

I picked up my copy of Ebay from someone who didnt really know the CD and just used the standard (1CD) description for the disc. When I quized them they replied telling me the Disc was infact the Judas O double CD.....I snapped it up on "buy it now" straight away

I just bought the Rotten Apples/Judas O CD on half.com for $13 brand new and sealed. I thought it was a damn good deal.
