I see this has become more of a "when did you get into them" thread than anything.

I first heard of them when I was 6. I would see 1979 & Tonight Tonight on MTV all the time and really liked the songs. I loved the moon and the aliens in Tonight Tonight's music video. It was just so soothing. Of course, being a six year old I just sang along and enjoyed them while they were on, not caring to actually pursue them or buy a CD. I had heard BWBW and Disarm as well, but wasn't exactly aware that it was the same band (I was a kid, dammit). 1979 & Tonight still hold a special place in my heart. I don't care if they are overplayed singles, the are what got me into the Pumpkins and I love them just the same as their more unknown songs.

Finally, I really got into them soon as I started to actually get into music. Bought MCIS, then Siamese Dream, then all the others. Still don't have Aeroplane Flies High, though. Or Judas O.

I was born in 1990... and I discovered them during the hiatus, saw the Bullet With Butterfly Wings clip on Rage, thought it was okay, so I downloaded the album... blown away with the depth of all of the other songs. I then downloaded Gish and Siamese Dream, and Smashing Pumpkins have been my favourite band ever since.

Downloaded?? Did you eventually buy the CD's?

i was completely thrown off when i saw downloaded and 1990. i assume you downloaded them more recently.
