I think Zeitgeist will be looked on more favorably only in comparison to the records they will put out in the next nine years. And it still will not be regarded in the same league as the earlier albums.

Hmmmm...I can't ever remember hearing or reading anything or thinking that Rock 101 was void of value. Actually some of the most basic music is truly amazing. Sometimes going back to basic is the farthest away from the norm as possible.

Let me guess, you're a Sonic Youth fan?!
Basic music can be amazing but Zeitgeist is that much basic and trivially that it could have been released in the 70s as medicore hard rock album.

Zeitgeist in 9 years time? I'm afraid I'm going to have to go with the repetitive answer in this topic and say it could well be forgotten. The overall album sounds very contemporary and I too struggle to connect with the songs. It saddens me to say that Billy was trying too hard to go mainstream with it thus making it not a pure Pumpkins album (to me anyway).
Their earlier albums had a lot more effort and thought put towards them.

*laugh* Well let's just say I'm an enjoyer of all music. *grin*
Interesting points Don, and I'm not saying Zeitgeist is the end all be all or not...what I think is not important. My thought was on Rock 101.
My first response to Zeitgeist being dropped in the 70s was a bit tounge in cheek so I won't even imagine sharing *laugh*.
But talking about Zeitgeist I would have to say I can't exactly agree with what was said about a 70s release. And this is why...I have been thinking of all the hard rock bands from the 70s and really if Zeitgeist were dropped during this era it would have been a WT>>> is this??!!?? In the beginning there was Hendrix, Cream, The Who, Steppinwolf, Alice Cooper and the ever mighty Led Zep. Then further in the 70s Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, AC/DC, and Kiss came on in (OK I am leaving some out...so sue me ;P). I can see pieces of these bands in aspects of the Pumpkins music. But really. If you truly think about it do you think it would be an oh...hummm...Zeitgeist.....zzzzz? In my mind I can't. But I'd like to hear why others would think differently.
But if you are talking on pure trivially that is entirely subjective, what is trivial to one is a complete treasure to another.

One thing I started thinking about is fluctuations in writing for musicians. For me as a musician, writing comes in waves, and it will also take drastic turns once you reach the point of "Damnit, I don't want to sound that way! I've already done that before!"
What I'm getting at here is that if you look at the catalogue of music Billy created from 2000-2006 after the first incarnation of SP broke up, but before the current one, a lot of it was fantastic, emotionally heartfelt soft rock, or folksy acoustic tunes.
What I'm implying HERE is that right now, perhaps he just wants to rock! I still think he has it in him to make another tear jerker like "To Forgive", or something as epic as "Porcelina", but he might not be in that place musically right now.
