thats one good advantage that bands like the pumpkins, radiohead, and nin have. their name is larger and more popular and has more value than anything a record company can offer them. which is exciting for us to where they will and can go musically. but as you said, i feel for the new bands out there. maybe they can still carve out a niche without a record label. it will be hard but i guess the next few years will tell how new and small bands will fare.

that's very true, it will be interesting to see how new bands fare over the next couple of years. Names are everything these days and thats why the pumpkins can afford to be unsigned

Well as money grabbing as record companies are they do work pretty hard.
Think about it:
Distribution, sales, marketing, development, accounts of CDs, legal work...
That's some pretty hard work there, but there's a line that record companies cross.
The whole point of a record company is to support the artist and their creativity.
Virgin has certainly killed that.
