American Gothic Culture 2 Months ago
|
|
The likes of The Smashing Pumpkins have brought a touch of emotion and thought to the rock table.
Love, frustation, hate and determination ,songs that reflect to all of us.
Is it fair to say that Billy has been so successful because he knew how to get in touch with his 'feminine' side.
By that I mean getting in touch with your emotions instead of hiding them.
He seems to have the rare ability make music that speaks to both girls and boys.
Americans have a great tradition in inventing musical subcultures and I think that the term American Gothic is good description of the Smashing Pumpkins cultural output so far.

Agreed!!!
I've always felt that gothy-touch in Billy's songs, tough, he's no classic gothic musician (but even better ).
It's less pathetic and more emotional than gothic music and on hte other hand, they started as American underground rockers...so it fits very well in my eyes. 'Cause gothic normally is something British, but Billy seems to have found an American way to discribe all his dark feelings in a more honest way...dunno how to tell, but when I discovered Pumpkins years ago, I actually supposed them to be some kind of gothic musicians...
but yeah, wasn't there another thread about it?!

I think that the U.S.A is such a vast country that the whole musical subculture vibe has evolved in a unique way.
Out of that cultural melting pot ,came rock'n'roll which changed music forever.
Just imagine what we would be listening to now if rock had not been invented.
American gothic is good.

They can't be just "cyber metal". They have songs that don't sound like Zero.
An interesting point about Billy's feminine side.
Overall, his music is kind of bi-sexual, isn't it?

in one interview booklet, btw i am gonna et this sometime, he says that is why he wears a skirt, because of his feminine side.
i wouldn't say it is bi, but i would say it has a healthy dose of feeling, feeling that is missing from alot of music.

The Smashing Pumpkins ARE bisexuality, in a good way:
compare "X Y U" to "Porcelina"...and it's from the same album...

If a song has passion and feeling then both genders will connect with it.
I'm not sure what the demograph of the Pumpkins is ,but a heck of a lot of girls seem to get what Billy Corgan is saying.
We have a great saying in England.
Girls are made of sugar and spice and all things nice.
Boys are made of snips and snails and puppy dogs tails.
Billy Corgan is made of greatness.

In terms of sexuality, I think it would be quite difficult to determine what kind of attraction Smashing Pumpkins' music has to... anything really. I guess it could be "androgenous," or "sexless," because it speaks to anybody.
"American Gothic" is a great description!
