That was an interesting trailer. This dvd looks to be really great. It's looking like I won't be able to go to any ann. concerts so this might be all I have to look forward to in Nov. but at least it will be awesome.

I went to four of them, camped out for eight hours each time.
When you go to The Fillmore they say, "Welcome to the Fillmore" and they give you an apple.
No apples for SP shows. Guess they were afraid we'd throw it at them.  |

A few weeks ago, in anticipation of the Pumpkins' upcoming DVD release, If All Goes Wrong (November 11th, 2008), SP.com connected with the project's director and producer, Jack Gulick, to talk about the Pumpkins' first full-length live performance release since 1994's Vieuphoria (re-released in 2002 on DVD).
SP.com: What other projects have you worked on prior to this project with the Pumpkins?
JG: Documentaries, mainly about artists in music, dance, or live performance, live music concerts for TV and film, along with lots of other side adventures in music video.
SP.com: How did you get connected with the band? Were they drawn to you, you to them, or a bit of both?
JG: We heard that the Pumpkins had begun to do live performances again in Europe, along with rumors that these Residencies were about to start, so we made arrangements to meet with Billy and Jimmy to present a plan to make a DVD encompassing the "New Vision" for the band. In that meeting, Billy and Jimmy seemed interested, but, as we came to expect from then on, they upped the stakes and challenged us to "go there", "to get it right", "to be honest", "to commit to the whole process", etc. With the band, we discussed my documentary and live music background, and Dan's live music background, as well as some of the things the band had had on their mind and were looking to have expressed. From this conversation, we agreed that we would shoot every day, from the beginning of the Residencies to the end, and create a verite documentary of the endeavor, filled with new music. And, we fully agreed it had to be honest; we wanted to show the creative process, good or bad, as long as it was truthful. For the musical performances, we agreed to shoot 5 full shows in San Francisco, while we were also shooting the Documentary. From those shows, Billy and Jimmy hand selected the songs that represented the "new work" most accurately for the Concert DVD. The Documentary and the Concert DVDs should really be viewed within a few hours of each other to get the full impact of the concept.
SP.com: Did you have any prior knowledge of the band's video history? Was the band's previous video endeavor, Vieuphoria, brought up at any time in early production? Was there any sort of throw back to the themes of this previous video?
JG: Yes, we did have an understanding of the band's video history, but felt that the Residencies were a complete enough artistic expression, that to try and capture it fully and completely was the appropriate approach, rather than trying to include too much from what proceeded. Though I should add that the past did seep in a few times, and it is all reported in the movie. |
