All Green Day needs for each song is two guitar tracks, a bass track, a drum track, and vocals. And the occasional piano track. It's going to be just like Nevermind.

well sometimes bands have to think abuot how a song is going to translate from the studio to the stage so with a three piece band they have to keep it simple

A very good point!
Its not like a 4 piece band who can get away with complex lead guitar part complimenting a Rhythm guitar on stage as well as a studio recording.

Actually, during Green Day's American Idiot tour, they enlisted the help of additional musicians. And man, was the show phenomenal!

Sometimes I, too, wonder about the Pumpkins' ability to translate their most grandiose studio tracks (say, for example, "Tonight Tonight" into the live spectrum. In that, I think Lisa (and Mike Garson before her) has been one of the most valuable players on the SP team. Sure, synthetic strings coming from a b8 or other keyboards isn't quite the same as a 30-piece orchestra, but I think she's holding up her end of some classic epics very well!

Maybe this next record will be the one where they totally alienate their fans when they play more than four different chords in succession.
