Smashing Pumpkins covers 2 Years, 1 Month ago
I'd like to dedicate a topic to cover songs the Smashing Pumpkins have done of other bands (not the other way around). If you're familiar with the original songs, what do you think of Billy's take on them? How do you think they compare?
I found a list of cover songs by the Pumpkins on this website:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/music/smashing-pumpkins-faq/part2/

I'd also like to use this opportunity to see if anyone knows where I could find a recording of their cover of Joy Division's "Transmission," during their Adore tour. I'd really like to hear it!

Thanks a million, McMurderson!!!

Concerning "Transmission," I'd say that it's pretty removed from the cold feel Joy Division gave to it; it's a different kind of rockability. The two-note theme of the original version is also absent—so the connection between the two is more lyrical than anything else. And even then, Billy went off with his own lyrical takes on the radio; so then the only connection pretty much ends up being the theme of the "radio."

Now that I think of it, does anyone else think that this may have been a precursor to the "I of the Radio"?

This seems to be a lot more jam oriented, so who knows? I love this version though! Good drumming really makes such jams especially nice. Jimmy's work would have been lots more appropriate though.

main riff:

Drop D
---------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------
--------------------11----11-11--------------------------
---------------------x-----x--x--------------------------
--------9h10---------9-----9--9-------9h10---------------
--9h10--------0--0------0--------9h10-------0--0--...----

you´ll have to figure out the rest of octaves as he goes up on your own because i don´t remeber exactly what billy plays.. but that´s the spirit of the main riff.. the (few) verses are probably just D(000230) and C.. and the rest is probably just delay chaos, feedback and a lot of noise

I think bc probably picks the 2 notes of the octaves one by one at the beginning of the song when he´s still using a clean tone.. add vibrato, as usual

I adore the covers of You're All I've Got Tonight and Destination Unknown. Same with Don't You Want Me and Landslide.

Destination Unknown is a very interesting one, adding a rock element to such a new wave/ techno song. Same with Don't You Want Me. When I heard the original version, I almost couldn't believe the Pumpkins could make it a song I wanted to rock out to. Loves it.

I agree, Billy's cover of "Landslide" is really touching. It's the best version I've heard anyone sing.

I recently found out that the Smashing Pumpkins have done covers of songs by Gary Numan. Could anyone help me find these?

"Landslide" is my favorite SP cover song, although I don't mind Fleetwood Mac's original.

Their cover of The Cure's "A Night Like This" is one of my favorite SP songs. James is great on vocals for that song.

I really want to hear SP cover a Violent Femmes song. Gone Daddy Gone or Add It Up would be really sweet.

Was it not played by 'Starchildren', I know it was a cover of Joy Division.

I agree. I almost couldn't tell they were the same song! But I really love James' droopy take on it.

Also, does anyone know where I can find Billy's cover of "Isolation"?
