Equipment question 2 Years ago
What does James use when they play Zero live for the solo that makes that weird, squealy, squeezed-out sound? it's also used a little bit on 'rubberman" I think... since that's been so popular lately.

Octave pedal?

I confess, I didn't go listen to zero yet, but for Rubberman..that's how he can sound crazy like that, and if you throw everything up an octave, it sounds pretty messed up with distortion.

There's a section on that somewhere, I believe:

(This comes from jamesiha.org):
"
The Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness era had lots of strange and rare effect pedals and processors. For the "Zero" solo, Iha used the Digitech DHP harmonizers which he replaced with the Eventide H3000 Harmonizer live."

and as for live stuff on the last tour:

"James often used a Digitech Whammy Pedal for his solo parts on "Heavy Metal Machine," "Cash Car Star," and "Rock On". He used a Korg SDD-2000 processor for the spacey solos and a Boss AutoWah AW-2 pedal."

Yep. Darn you guitarists and all those effects that sound so great on your instrument. I suppose it's not a requirement for a bass part to sound insane like that, but in the right hands (like those of Chris Wolstenholme) bass effects can sound fantastic.

Hey that's cool, I have that pedal. Same one Tom Morello uses.

Yeh, james used the Eventide H3000 Harmonizer For the Zero solo, I've seen close up pictures of when they were playing and the cameraman was snapping pics of his shoes or something and that was in there. kooky camera man I guess.

oh snap

talk about solos that mess with you

this guy knows how to use his effects...I don't know what the new single is called, but the solo where he makes his guitar sound like a laughing hyena or something...pretty crazy

He's so crazy that there are equipment lists for individual solos...it's fantastic! One of the solos requires a pen, if I'm correct.
