...also-- what's the best way to record guitar? a while ago i tried simply plugging some 1/8 in. audio cord w/ a 1/4 adapter into my microphone port.... it sounded like crap! i think i saw a 1/4 to usb cord at target once...
mm.. the best way to record guitar is to mic your amp, there are many ways to place the mic, and many types of mics, Do not plug your guitar directly to your mic jack on your computer the sound is just not right, conecting your guitar directly is just aceptable if you do it through a mixing console and even if you want to mic your guitar you need a mixing console, if this is not the case, i'll recomend buying a computer microphone in an office depot, plug it in, and experiment in the best ways to place it (near or far from your amp),volume , position etc etc...
The 1/4 to usb cord you mention is a nice way to record, but when you are recording a guitar, the amp gives a different "sound", it's not the same thing to record your guitar through a little imitation amp, than in a vintage one, than in a big fat Marshall, etc... the amp adds reverb, body, eq, etc..., that's why for example the pumpkins record and play with their own amps to keep the "distinctive" sound .
