We are probably going to get a lot of mentions of Mayonaise, that is, if this thread lifts off.
Basically, if you have been wondering how a band (not just the Pumpkins, but it would probably be good if it was) gets a certain effect or sound in one of their songs, then ask here.
And, if you are the sort of person who like to answer these kind of things, fire away.
Personally, I was wondering how to get that whining sound like on Porcelina, from about 7:30 onwards, especially noticeable from 8:35.

I was wondering how to get that cool sound on the very intro of Quiet, before the drums start. it's written in the guitar tab book but... I guess you can't really play that live without any redoings?

I read on a guitar tab somewhere that that part is just guitar kanoodling/sliding up and down the fretboard played back in reverse.

I'm not entirely sure.
SD seems to have a very different atmosphere, I described it on another thread as "dusty", and i said dusty because it reminds me of my piece of shit amp that i have, normally when I want distortion, I just crank everything up to 10, and stick a fuzz pedal on it, and it sounds rather "dusty"...
Gish and MCIS have a much slicker sound, don't you think?

Billy used the big muff quite heavily on siamese dream.
I have one. It's great, and I can get some real nice SP crunch.

Siamese Dream distortion is amazing!
We are probably going to get a lot of mentions of Mayonaise, that is, if this thread lifts off.
Assuming that a few people are going to ask how they got that high pitched feedback in Mayonaise I'll answer it ahead of time. (most of you already know this)

Some sort of harmonizer and octave pedal. Look in the Equipment Thread, Teej just bought one.

Oh.
Yeah I saw that.
I was thinking of getting one too but they're so expensive.

if you want to know what effects they use at certain points in songs, look at 0bscured.com. in the tab they tell you what effect is used. for example: "Play with harmonizer set to double notes a 4th lower as well as an octave higher"
what i want to know is what effects were used in stellar. im working on perfecting it.

during the adore-tour (especially the bilbao/spain gig 1998) you see james holding a thingy in his hands which vibrates (????) the strings and gives the sound, without strumming or playing them.
did you see that?

It's an Ebow. Very, very common in the Pumpkins music.

For future refrence, spfc has an equipment section that lists various guitars, pedals, amps, ect. It sometimes even lists the song/tour it was used on.

Okay, well that's settles then, any effects to do with SP, look for it via that link.
Does anyone know the technique that stretches out a vocal note, like on "Praise You" by Fatboy Slim, when it sounds like "I have to praise you like I shoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooould..."
And the note goes on for a really really really RIDICULOUSLY long time.
I'm pretty sure that what he did was take a very small snippet of that sung note and just repeated it very quickly, you can tell just by listening to it.
Am I far off?
And does anyone know what that's called, and what the finer points of it are or where I could find out more info about it?
