Smashing Pumpkins are really the odd ones out in my music taste, I'm a complete new indie rock kid.
1) The Libertines, Self titled
2) Bloc Party, Silent Alarm
3) Dirty Pretty Things, Waterloo to Anywhere
The Libertines just sum up what is so good about British music, no one can deny that they (and possibly Franz Ferdinand) started the new wave of indie punk rock thats everywhere now. The albums just amazing, It doesn't matter what anyone says about him, Pete Doherty is one of the best writers around.
Bloc Party are just so talented musicly, I'm seeing them in february a few days before their second album comes out. Their music is very modern and very progressive (but not in the prog rock sense thank god.)
Waterloo to Anywhere is the best modern punk album around, like the libertines very British (possibly because its fronted by a man who used to be in the libertines), very good music and lyrics, some songs which are quite similar to Behold! The Night mare in the sense that they have tempo changes midway thru the song which work really well.
Also, I love 80's new wave like the cure and Echo and the Bunnymen but i don't have favourite albums by them

People have been using the terms "punk" and "indie" in a ridiculously gratuitous way as of late...
Anyway, I agree with you Believe. That last sentence sums it up perfectly:

Joy Division - Closer
Joy Division - Unkown Pleasures
KRS One - KRS One
The first two are Pretty self explanatory. Joy Division is my favorite band besides the pumpkins. Noone does depression like Ian Curtis - NOBODY! If I had to write a soundtrack for my life half would be Pumpkins and half would be Joy Division. I'm listening to KRS One's self titled album right now and it's really refreshing. With all the "crap rap" out today i had to dig into the archives for some hip hop to listen to. This album was over my head when I was young but he raises some great points on this disc about everything from politics to religion. Far from the babble that passes for rap these days.

wow, it's to hard to name just three, but I am a big fan of 80s hardcore punk, goth rock, and grunge. That might be why I like SP, they had a goth element and a grunge element.
I was raised on prog rock, and I knew almost every Rush album by the time i was three. Needless to say, I hate them now, except for 2112, which is still a decent album, and their newer albums, but between 2112 and the 90s is complete shit
Old garage rock is cool too

Bjork - Homogenic. She has the voice of the gods but the gods speak much different then you would expect. The combination of Dark electronica and classical music is astounding and breathtaking at times. Bjork is a true artist and this is her masterpiece. Good variety, songwriting, and of course Bjork's expansive voice.
TWo Thumbs up for this review. I totally agree and Bjork Totally slipped my mind. I guess because I put her music on such a different level. It's really like going to church. To quote the RZA "She has a voice that can communicate with the gods."
"Joga" is so emotional - it's like a conversation with God - a prayer set to the the landscape of those powerful strings. She is the BEST female musician in my eyes.
And while we are on the topic of female artists:
I'd like to add Sade - Love Deluxe to my list. It's a perfect album.

I have The Forgotten Arm by Aimee Mann. I just saw it in a shop, had never heard of her and know nothing about her music, but I bought it anyway. I find it to be an alright album - how does it compare to her other work?
