Please help me make my decision~! 2 Years, 2 Months ago
i saw that poptart asked for some advice a few weeks back and she got a really good responce! could you guys give me your opinion on this- or what you would to in this situation?
i am currently at an private anglican co-ed (boys and girls) school. i have been here since year one and am now just finishing year nine. i am soooo sick of school altogether and have thought about leaving (as in school, school not just my school), but decided its quite hard for girls without a year 12 certificate to get a decent job a keep it.

i am juggling between suffering at my current school for three whole more years or going to an all girls catholic school just down the road from where i live. i think it would look better on my resume if i stay at my current, as its a private school, and it would also be better for my O.P. score. (im not sure if they have O.P.s anywhere else but australia...?) staying at my current school would raise my O.P. because of all the smart people (they somehow raise everyone elses average) but the girls school has lots of indigenous girls which usually lower the average O.P. score for the others. (as english isnt their first language)

the thing is.. i HATE the school im at the moment. all of their morals are wrong and its full of snobby people, but i can get better marks there. but ive never been to another school in my life so wouldnt know what it was like anywhere else.

the other school has a more laidback feel to it, and the people there seem very nice and down to earth.

geeze, i had alot on my mind- sorry its so long!
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Wow, that's a hard one. I think you should try and stick it out for a while where you are. Give at least a month before you make such a change.

yeah...definitely don't drop out of school all together, you'll regret it

I dont know what this O.P. is, but it sounds important...I would stick with it as long as I could

if it got to the point where it's unbearable, then I guess I'd switch.

but you can always hang out with the people from that all girls school, if you dont like the people at your school

The last few years are always the hardest. It feels more and more like people are jerking your chain.
I had to tell myself over and over, "Just a little longer, I've made it this far, I can do it."
Definitely get your 12 year certificate, but talk to your parents about the school. They may have a good opinion about the Catholic one.
It may also help to think of it as a rite of passage. Instead of a hunting rite, or balancing on top of a pole, living in the jungles alone for a month, etc. This is a modern rite that tests your stamina and tolerance for society.

If its really killing you, then you should switch, but think long and hard first and spek to anyone that canhelp, e.g. parents teachers.
Remember, there are more important things in life than what qualifications you have.
Theres no point getting them if you get destroyed in the process.

all that worry about what op scores is, sounds like you really care about school, i changed my high school like 4 times, and the one im at now is good, its one of the "worst" schools, its in "the hood", but i dont care for anything other than grade 12, so its good for me, either way, if you dont like your school, you should switch, id admire someone who switch from a private school, just because they didnt like the attitude there, and theres no real sane reason to stay there, in my mind, lol, just dont drop out is all

Think for the long term. You want your resume to look better, and besides, you want the best education and life/income you can get, right?

god, thats a crazy way of thinking, the hell with a hefty income and nice resume, thats like staying at a job you hate, just because it pays good, its not a good thing to do

yteah, i think its all of the pompus rich kids brainwashing me about how important my marks are, when really, they aren't important in year 9 (or in any grade, if money isnt your definition of success)

Rivers Cuomo and shame, you are right, if its killing me then i should move. its kind of half killing me at the moment- making me unconscious or something. i'll wait a month, like believe said (until the end of term the year) and see if that is enough time for them to kill the rest of me...

Re: Please help me make my decision~! 2 Years, 2 Months ago
i went to an all girls private catholic school up to year 10 then it went co-ed...liked it..but all girls might be a shit head for your senior years.. finish school, even if its just to mature socially. i know ppl that left in yr 10 and they told me that they felt socially out of whack when they did cos everyone else stayed.... a piece of paper is good but dont freak about marks especially in year 9. i was non-existant in year 11 and 12 and still got into 4 major unis in NSW and ACT...its not as hard as people make out sometimes, i dunno everyones different.

one point that i want to make to everyone here who is in highschool (some may disagree) whatever your doing in this world takes some level of work and most of the time its shit unless u happen to get an occupation that you love, or enjoy studying something you love. life is drugery most of the time especially when you have to support yourself etc etc

for me, yes i love the freedom of not being at home, i HATED my home life, and now live in a city 5 hrs away frm parents...but sometimes i wish i could go back, highschool for me was an excuse to be supported by my parents, i had a job and did what i wanted with the money, went out 3 or 4 nights a week, (by no means were my family lax, i was just smart about it all) no rent, no bills, no trying to find an apartment...no huge expectations socially as far as income, status or how clean you keep your fucking house!!! hahaha

so if your not bullied and the only thing u hate about school is that its school, STAY THERE!!!!

the real world pales in comparison sometimes, or it can just be hard work...pleaaaase believe me.

(disclaimer-i currently have $5 to my name until i go to work tomorrow, i owe 2 weeks rent on mon and a bill on tues, and i just found out the guy i almost might love doesnt want a relationship...so thats probably why i think highschool was better! hahaha)

i should change my name to ruby rant...sorry stumb...stay in school!!!!

haha thanks, ruby.
your right about the work thing. my dad works so hard- 6 days a week more than 12 hours everyday and the only reason he does it is because he can have a disposable income (he hates it by the way) i wonder why he bothers because he doesnt have time to spend it anyway. also, its pointless doing something just for the money. i think its a waste of time unless you enjoy it.

i think its just the whole 'school thing' that i hate. i dont know exactly what that is. maybe its a bunch of adolescents obsessed with the top 40 and thinking they have to be in a relationship by they time they are 13. or maybe its just my school- i wouldnt know though.

A "hefty income and nice resume" does not necessarily tie in with "staying at a job you hate." Like you said, it's an obsession with money and success that leads to stress and unhappiness, but getting a good education, if it's in something you love and are interested in, is one of the best things you can do.

I think it's best to keep your options open. If graduating from your current school means you have better prospects for the future, then I'd say that's a good thing. And you don't have to jump right in with what everyone else is doing after that. Do whatever you like, do what you love, discover what interests you, and then if you ever find something you would like to pursue, then at least you'll have a good starting point.

On the other hand, I know what you mean about not being able to stand high school. There's just so much bullshit everywhere that you have go through—with the annoying classmates, with the system, with this over-achieving obsession some people have...
I hated high school so much that by senior year I was constantly looking for ways to cut class. I look back on those years with such bitterness, and even now I view them as a huge waste of 4 years of my time. But I don't think that anything I could have done, including transferring to another school, could have made it better. The best thing that you can do, and other people have mentioned it already here, is to find something you love, an obsession, and stick with it. I never really found mine until my junior year of college (last year), and I'm much much happier now (well, relatively).

The thing about high school is....

it's best and worst years of your life

I look back on those years, and I'm so glad I got to experience some of the things I did

but you couldn't pay me a million dollars to do it all again

it strange, because i remember so many crappy things, but i cant remember too many good things. i guess its because im in a state of mind thats against school. maybe after i graduate i will be so happy about it that i will remeber the good things too.
