Tenacious D would not be good opener for SP. Three opening bands would be kind of excessive. I would suggest a band like Garbage, but now they are too big to be opener for Pumpkins (although they did for U2, but then again, U2 has more fans than SP, so a greater gap between Garbage and them). Plus Garbage is on hiatus.

Here is a few possible bands:
-Ivy (includes Adam Schelsinger from Fountains of Wayne and Scratchie Records): http://www.myspace.com/ivy
-Doves- a great band I really like from the UK, although they are not influenced by SP or a related artist, so I don't see this happening (http://www.doves.net)
-Kill Hannah-Chicago rock veterans, and some of the members are influenced by SP (namely Mat and Greg). Billy has given them advice in the past about music, and apparently they have heard some initial recordings from SP's sessions for the new album. At Act IV in 2001, Billy introduced them and said "Unlike me, they are the future of Chicago rock". http://www.myspace.com/killhannah

I would personally love for The Mars Volta to tour with the pumpkins, either them or Queens of the Stone age, but for some reason i think they have already toured with them. Maybe I am just insane
But hey I would probably rather have a new band that I didn't know about open for them. If they kick ass then maybe I'll expand my musical horizon.

I think the best bands to open for the pumpkins would be Muse and Audioslave. If I had to pick a third, I might say deathcab for cutie, but for some reason i don't see them touring with the pumpkins. I also think it would completely rock if they had no opening acts and just played a really long show. Holy crap, I can't wait to finally get to see the pumpkins live!

Even though I don't personally listen to Tenacious D, I am not saying that they shouldn't open for SP because I 'hate them', its because of objectively or subjectively, they simply aren't a good fit with the Pumpkins style. Just like Grant Lee Buffalo wasn't when they opened for SP in 96. I wish I would have been able to see Garbage or Fountains of Wayne open for them instead like they did on other parts of the tour. But I suppose you can keep dreaming

Yes, Queens of the Stone Age opened for them before, during The Arising! Tour in spring 1999.

There is one band that I did not mention which I think I can plausibly mention-Remy Zero. They would be a perfect fit! Some of you Remy Zero fans maybe thinking, 'well didn't they break up as well?". Yes, they did, but apparently we have been in a cave (or at least I have), they are indeed reuniting! The Pumpkin Queen brought it to my attention when I responded to one of her blogs on her myspace, saying she had great taste in music for liking Remy Zero, but that it was too bad they had broken up. Someone reminded me that Remy Zero may have even opened for Zwan a couple of times. Also, Remy Zero has a good relationship with Metro, I seem to remember hearing that they were friends with one of the talent buyers. Not to mention, that Billy was once quoted as saying that "Prophecy" was the best song of 1998.

Speaking of Garbage opening for people I went to this concert of the Japanese "Polysics," and touring with them was "Los Abandoned." After the concert I thought back and knew that the warm up band was better than Polysics. I saw Los Abandoned after the show and asked them stuff about their music and they said prior to this tour they were the opening band for Garbage and said the people from Garbage were really nice and stuff ^_^. Just thought I'd throw that around

Cool. Yeah I get the impression that the Garbage crew are nice, although I have never met them. They just radiate that kind of energy, or something like that :P. I finally got see Garbage perform last year. It was fantastic, except for the fact that they played "Cherry Lips", which is one of the songs I dislike the most on BeautifulGarbage. I didn't like that album in general, but their were a few good tracks on there I would have liked hearing live (eg. Parade, Cup of Cofee, Breaking up the Girl, So like A Rose). If I am remember correctly, they also did not play my favorite song off of Bleed Like Me, "Run, Baby, Run". oh well. It was a fantastic show.

Now since Billy is apparently working with Shirley Manson on her solo record, she is a possibility for an opener. The caveat is that it would require her solo record to not come completely out of left field. It's good not to repeat Garbage, but it's also not good if she strays to far into the territory explored some of my least favorite songs on BeautifulGarbage .

To say they don't fit with what you perceive is the pumpkin's style is simply your opinion - and of course if you don't listen to them I don't expect that you would want to see them perform at all...but you should not be so appalled that someone else might.

I don't want to see a bunch of wanna-be pumpkins, i want to see bands with their own identity.

That band they had on their Myspace would be a good fit, I think. The Boxer Rebellion. They're quite unique to me, and they're in need of exposure.
