To bring up that interview Billy did with "The New Music" again, He theorises that music comes in waves. We're sort of in the 80's right now with bands like The killers or Mobile. The 80's mainstreem music, as well as today's, has an element of pretnetiousness to it. When "Grunge" came around, all that pretentiousness was erased and good music(imo) was back in again. Please Billy!!! Destroy pretentiousness again!!! Make the killers go on Welfare!!!

I should've explained that the 80's pretentiousness pails in comparison to the vast sea of pretentiousness there is today. The good artists in the 80's (ex. The Cure) unintentionally made their music have a slight hint of pretentiousness to it by making it unique and cool. One has to question if bands like the Killers or PAtD intentionally make their music pretentious or "hip" to appeal to the suburban rich snob kids.

i dont like the 80's pop, that is like 99.9% synthesizer, i just dont like it, but 80's rock, was great, even though it was my least favorite Rolling Stones Period.....they tried to go stadium rock, (which i pesonally dont like)

the killers, i never really liked them, i thought the songw "somebody told me" was great, but then it got overplayed....

what noisy cats are we link=topic=725.msg10962#msg10962 date=1163122358]
this is funny, because I was just recently talking to my husband about this. I was watching something on tv about this retirement community, and it showed these old people dancing to some music from the 40's...and I started talking about how funny it will be in 50 years, when our generation is living in nursing homes, and i'll be trying to avoid the senior-moshpit!
Seriously though, my musical likes and dislikes have changed somewhat with the times...I listen to stuff I liked as a teenager in the 80's, like depeche mode, the cure, nick cave, fugazi, the pixies...stuff I liked in college like slint, mazzy star, palace brothers (now better known as bonnie "prince" billy), sebadoh, lots of early 90's indie bands...and I also love current stuff like bright eyes, death cab, decemberists....Aaaaaannnd stuff from 'before my time', like bowie, the stones, the who, beatles, cheap trick, sabbath...etc etc...hell, i guess i just love th' rock n roll. So maybe when I'm old, if there's still good new music being made, I'll like it as much as what's come out in my younger days. And yeh, I'm pretty sure I'll still dig the pumpkins even when i'm old and gray!

-shannon

Speaking of The Decemberists, I love the new album, The Crane Wife. It sounds more serious/subdued than their other stuff, but I like the change.
If our generation stays with the current music, I hope 50 Cent and Panic! at the Disco won't be playing on the oldies channel. That'd be so weird. Hopefully all of this emo crap is just a movement that'll die out within in the next 10 minutes.

I've noticed it already with myself & I'm only 19. I hate 95% of new music. I can't stand most stuff on MTV, like indie bands, emo bands, not to mention pop, rap & crap dance. All my CDs come mostly from the 90s & the 70s.
It's even happening with bands I like too e.g. can't stand Stadium Arcadium even though I love the Chilis.
There are a few that keep me going though - thank god for Muse.

You say you hate indie bands, but you like Muse. Isn't Muse considered to be indie (at least in the US)? I'm an indie rock kind of kid (i.e. Rilo Kiley, The Decemberists, Bloc Party, The New Pornographers, The Shins, Spoon, etc.).

I'm sorry, but i'm gonna go on a rant here (i just have a thing about people refering to Muse as indie rock)
They are not indie rock, and have very little in common with the slew of indie rock bands around at the moment. For a start, most of their songs dont sound the same (ok, that was a cheap shot )
I would personally class Muse as an alternative rock band, with prog and funk influences. I'll admit, their new album is a lot more mainstream (though no less brilliant) than their earlier stuff, but give Absolution a listen, and you'll find they have more in common with Queen than any band around at the moment.
Ok, rant over, just wanted to get that off my chest

Most of my favorite music is from within a few years of when I was born (1989)... Sometimes I wish I was about 15 years older so I could've listened to this stuff when it was new.
