The whole series is just a money making exercise
JK Rowling - you can't invest almost 20 years of you life, with so much passion, into "just a money making exercise".
She has been writing harry potter since 1987?
I said almost 20 years. The first one came out in 97, i think...I think she started writing in the early to mid 90s...
Anyway, you ignored the point of my post.

My girlfriend recently got me into reading the books and watching the movies afterwards...so far, I'm in the middle of the 3rd book. The series is a fun read so long as you remember that it was written for children. Lots of fun, stylish villains. I've always had a weakspot for that sort of thing.
The only real criticism I have of the series is how blatant the line between good and evil is throughout the books, just like in star wars (a series of movies that I'll never be able to get into). The good guys are sickeningly heroic and the bad guys are predictably evil in hindering the protagonists on their quest. Snape is really the only gray area in the whole book, and even then the most mildly observant reader will know whcih side he ends up on.
Well, the writing does get a little better as they go on, I think. As for the line between good and evil, you're right, it's a universal theme, etc, BUT, it does get pretty fuzzy...as for Snape, I wouldn't say he's either clearly good or evil...kinda complicated. But I don't wanna say too much, because you're only on the third book. (Oh the third book...oh Harry )
My advice for you: don't come back to this thread! Avoid all Harry talk, because honestly, finding out what happens WILL ruin it for you. (I hope you don't already know too much...)

I love the harry potter series, i know it isnt the greatest writing, but as has been said the story telling is great. Just coming back to the films for a minute: Voldemort in the latest film and Billy Corgan. Anyone else notice the similarity? think of how billy looked in the ava adore vid

Speaking of Harry Potter movies and Billy Corgan, it reminds me of this conversation I had with my 12 year old cousin.
Her: Whose that?!
Me: That's Billy Corgan
Her: EW! What's he wearing?!
Me: anyway...
Her: He should be in a Harry Potter movie. He could be like Snape's cool brother.
Me: ........ -.-
Yeah, her name is Tara, and she loves Fall Out Boy and thinks that The Smashing Pumpkins are "Reeeaaalllly old!" Remember she's 12...

I don't see why everyone's raving about the latest film though, I thought it was quite a disappointment after the third and fourth, which I loved.
The only reason I brought it up in my earlier post is because I thought that it was better than (in my opinion) movies 1,2, and 4. 3 and 5 were good I thought. Obviously they aren't "great" movies, but they are improving in acting, directing (although the 3rd was directed well) and basic storytelling.

Oh...and the best bit in the Deathly Hallows is probably Mrs. Weasley's "THAT'S MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!" moment...
That was great.

Im not bitter, i just see it as commercial.
How could it not be commercial if so many people buy it? Are you saying that you would have more respect for the books if not so many people liked them? I see what you're saying, but I think your argument is flawed; just because millions of people buy the books doesn't mean their creation is motivated by that...
Not everything that is commercial is popular, i dont hate everything that is popular, that would be a slighty silly thing for me to have meant hence my favourite band was arguably the most successfull band of the 90's. I call it commercial because i believe that it was created for the soul purpose of making money.

Ok as far as the whole I hate harry potter thing:
come on guys every other freakin fantasy book after LOTR copies Tolkien.
Harry Potter isn't the most challenging read or written "well", but that is because its meant for kids. As far as I am concerned it is the glory of the books in general. It is a fairy tale and everything is innocent and in the end good conquers evil. THAT IS CLASSIC so don't put it down.
Really, the whole I don't like something because everybody else likes it is so sophomoric. just cause something is popular doesn't mean it is only for the money (although some of it is).
OK back to the 7th book......
I loved the ending, it was a good book. some parts dragged, but it was worth it for the last 100 pages or so. the epilogue was good, I just wish it had a little more info in it like what harry does for a living

I always found such stories to be... inaccurate.
Contrary to popular belief, crime does pay, and the bad always win.

I have to reread it, I read it sort of fast, all in one day.
I think the epilogue should have either been left out entirely, or had more detail.
Like, what you said about what he does for a living, and what happens to the other main characters.
She did an interview on TV recently where she did sum up what happens to everyone and what Harry does for a living, except I've seen conflicting reports on what it is Ron does for a living.
I've really enjoyed the series, start to finish. I love how everything that happens ties into something else, even small details you don't think are important. I love her characters and dialogue so much, the whole world she creates, the drama and pace of everything, the sense of whimsy and dread, that I don't care (and hardly notice) the technical problems with her writing.
The whole thing is very ambitious from a creative standpoint and obviously filled with a lot of love. She obviously has cared very much about these characters and the world they're in, as well as the people around the world who have gotten attached to them.
