Random Advice Thread! 1 Year, 4 Months ago
|
|
Im generally sick of wandering around the net when im bored looking for advice on shit thats happening, and i mean its great to ask friends and family but i think it helps to sometimes to get random advice from people that u do and dont know on the internet! and why not here on this lovely board we all so awsomely dedicate so much time to...? i recently went back to kittyradio as its good for asking strangers random questions but non of my old frieds post there anymore and its become a really gay board.. ok might sound stupid but im putting it here so next time i have an issue i can jump on and ask all you lovely people what u think without starting a new thread. yes its ultimatly selfish but i ultimatly am, and it was pissing me off how emo some members were becoming without actually discussing anything...ESSENTIALLY..THIS BOARD NEEDS A SPACE LIKE THIS i will as a sidenote unnoffically dub it "Ask Bel" cos hes pretty good with pretty much everything and if he doesnt like it well, tough. but its for us all!!!! it might be hard but im going to start...in another post...so if i change my mind and freak out i can just ZAP it!

Hey as a matter of fact I need a little advice...
I like this girl but she lives VERY far away. She's beautiful, intelligent, great taste in music, great sense of humor, and she's a little screwed up. In other words she's PERFECT. The only problem is the distance. Her life is there and my life is here. With all that said, I really think she might be the one for me...How do i deal with this problem?

How long have you known her for? A lot of times, long distance relationships depend on how long you've known the person. My cousin lives here in San Francisco and her boyfriend is back in Arizona. They're working it out really well actually. So there's an example to give you some hope.

hmm that sounds like a question for Dr Phil. i guess patience would have to be the best thing to bear in mind at the moment. its hard to make decisions and keep promises over such a long distance. for all you know this girl could be a cheating, junkie whore, (i dont think she is you have splendid judgment in most things except laundry) so maybe just sit tight and let time tell. and if time doesnt tell, just pretend she fell off a cliff and died on impact broadening your mind to the concept that there might not just be ONE person for you!

It's like anything else Dougy, people need to categorize things. In theory, we are all human beings - right? - so why the need for race, classes, or any division for that matter?
People need to have a name for something. Even when a band like SP first emerged with the original concept of being the band that "wanted to play all styles of music" people eventually had to come up with a name for those types of bands -thus we have the term "alternative" - but there's no alternative to SP fans...to us SP is the standard not the alternative. It's the nature of mankind to label things.
To answer your question - the term emo has become more of a slang word for folks who generally didn't like what was considered Emo music...so now they just use the word to describe things they don't like. Some people see a car with an ugly paint job and say - "Thats so gay" They don't mean that the car is homosexual, gay is just a term they use to describe anything they don't like. Sadly, the word Emo is now used in much the same way.

*shudder* Using "gay" as a slang word is in no way acceptable. I'm utterly repulsed that that particular usage of the word has become part of the colloqial. It's like people throwing around the "n" word. (And don't worry, Believe, that's not a slag against you, but the people who do use those words mindlessly.)
The belittling of the word "emo" pisses me off too. It's trite, overused and antiquated. Emo music pretty much ended with the breakup of the Get Up Kids in 2004 anyway. (Some might even argue the breakup of Sunny Day Real Estate.) Emo shouldn't equate melodrama.

my biggest pet peeve is people who are WAY too politically correct! i would consider myself intelligent, well spoken and educated. i myself have many gay and lesbain friends and commonly use the term gay. SO DO THEY. i also frequently use the word cunt, but consider myself very able to use this word as i do have one.
i feel in this day and age some words have become to a degree socially acceptable within certain contexts, and unnaccaptable within other contexts and if used should only be within the right setting and with general AND acceptble context. (for example i wouldnt use the word cunt infront of my grandfather..as it would be an insult to his tradional views on the fact that i was "raised better" and it depends on the individual i suppose...i dont really like the word "Fag" as i hear it come from idiots who generally mean to insult but for me "gay" doesnt have the same connotations....
as far as the N word goes i cant say its generally a word that is included in most peoples vocabulary in Oz, but does present itself as an issue in the states due to its historical and modern use and context. (to my knowledge its a term meaning ignorant that was used in a derogitory context towards african slaves in america-correct me if im wrong?)
and it really just comes down to who is saying it. atleast in australia popular culture shows that if a black man calls another black man a N (gosh i cant even type it!) its not the same as if a white man does meaning to be racist. just the same as i would slap any man who called me a cunt meaning to be derogitory.
anyway aside from the fact that im probably no authority on any of this other than the cunt thing, people should consider whether or not something is going to directly hurt someone, and if it isnt we should all just try to move on a remember that there are other more proactive solutions aside from having a whinge.
and dougy, the term "emo" is so far past what it originally meant in its commonly spoken modern use that i figure i can use it in order to have a stab at teens with issues, real or imagined! as generally thats my point. and if i neglected the term emo and started saying "cutter" some politically correct bullshit artist would probably have an indirect go at me for making light of suicide.
most things can be laughed at, but only if you can laugh at yourself!!!

what about words like nazi or retard?
Exactly my point. When people use those terms I don't think they mean to offend retarded people - So don't take offense when people use the word emo in negative context because mostly likely it's not even an attack on anything emo at all.
