But the only other band who's really meant as much to me as the pumpkins is The Cure. But I could easily give a list of ten other bands that I really love.

I don't hate Nirvana, I don't like them enough to rave about them though. I definitely wouldn't rave about Green Day or MCR.

i would never rave about Green Day or MCR either, but to each their own.
i do really like Nirvana though. of course i think the SP is better, but Nirvana's music has a lot of energy and intensity to it too. its not the same as the SP to me by any means, but i just really like the sound of their music and the atmosphere of it. when i think about it though Sonic Youth is probably second and Nirvana maybe third, maybe. not meaning to turn the thread to Nirvana here. haha mostly i guess i just like 90's stuff and anything with an intensity to it. its hard to explain, but i just kind of like music that has a sort of intense atmosphere that draws you in, whether it be quiet or trance like or something louder and more explosive. i just like music with more feeling and a bit more depth, ie. not just some empty catchy pop tune. and granted Nirvana has some catchy commercial tunes- Smells Like Teen Spirit, etc. there is just a certain rawness to the sound of their music, a certain energy that gives them more depth to me. its not just empty music with nothing below the surface. its not the same as what Billy has going with his music, but better than a lot of crap out there.

You ought to try My Bloody Valentine if you haven't already.

i actually don't like them. they seem to just be a rip off band to me. not my thing.

I reckon they're probably one of the few bands you cant say that about haha - true pioneers. But I can see where your coming from. After all the shoegaze bands that came afterwards, some of them do take the music to more intersting places and because they've had such a big influence in music they dont sound that great on an initial listen.
