Wow, I didn't need a political scientist to tell me that one. Its not about voting for who is going to win, it's about voting for who truly represents you, and for me that person is Ron Paul.
In "political science" this is known as the "spoiler effect."
This occurs when a secondary candidate take votes away from the primary candidate that is close in belief to them. In other words, people who are against McCain, but not as against Obama, will vote for Ron Paul, because he has some attributes similar to Obama, but is still far enough away from McCain to consider.
This means, to put it simply, Paul could "spoil" the vote, leading those who might vote for Obama to vote for him. Perhaps it's because he wants to "stay strong?" Perhaps he just wants to go "down in history?"
Hillary going with Obama instead of running separately really helped the Democrats in this respect, because they won't be torn between too similar candidates.
Anyway, these are just my thoughts on your idea, Superchrist.

There's a lot of things I like about congressman Ron Paul, and there's some things I don't like.
He definitely would have been a better choice for the Republican nomination.

I agree he would have been better than McCain, but...it's politics and we all know it's never 100% honesty, which it needs to be.
I just don't understand why people in politics want to lie...it's ridiculous-it eventually will eat your conscious up
they need to keep it real

i HATE OBAMA! the republican national convention definitely showcased why mccain/palin are the better candidates with more experience. (kinda funny how palin has had more leadership experience than obama)
GO MCCAIN!

A vote for Ron Paul is NOT a vote for Obama. Since Ron Paul has absolutely no chance of winning, it'd be better to pick which candidate you hate less and go with him, because the fact is, one of them is going to be president. You may not agree 100% with either them, maybe not even 50%, but you'll be happier with the lesser of two evils in office.
Excuse my french, but McCain can "suck it".

good for you, with all the mccain hatred going around, you stand up for who you belive in.
i wanted hillary to get the nomination, she had my vote all the way.
i just don't like obama, i don't agree with alot of his views. and the tax cuts he proposes aren't really cuts, it is a redistribution of wealth, take from the rich give to the poor, so that the rich hike up the prices and cut jobs to keep more of thier money, good job obama, way to screw the little people, cause that extra 500 a year ain't gonna go very far when the price of EVERYTHING goes up. plus his views on partial birth abortion, not good imho.
so i don't know if i will vote or not.

However wins your election will have been carefully vetted by the 'Builderburger group' never heard of them? google and find out.
Every prospective president or prime minister of importance has met this group at on time or another. They call themselves a an economic steering group.
The candidate favored by the 'group' is deemed a safe pair of hands and nearly always wins.
Think about it, how else did Dubya win against Gore
How's that for a conspiracy theory.

Paul is way more fringe than Nader ever was. He won't be able to replicate Nader's draw from Gore.
My "desk job" is to edit political pundits, and for some reason, I got stuck with mostly conservatives or libertarians. I don't agree with these folks AT ALL. It PAINS me to have to approve Palin-heralding columns every day, while they are trying to supplant Obama with constant links to Bill Ayers and such. (COME ON, that's guilt by association. Haven't we ALL had a few really bad friends, but not necessarily emulated them? THANK YOU.)
And I really don't know where people get off saying that the media is left-leaning when the right HAS ITS OWN NETWORK called Fox "News."
There's no such thing as reality. It's all your own distortion/interpretation/etc. Both sides have their fingers jammed firmly into their ears, going "la la la can't hear you!" McCain actually USED to be a great senator who was willing to work with both parties, but he's pandered so much these days, I've lost all respect for him. And with his publicity stunt of a running mate (notice how EVERY news and opinion account of her mentions how beautiful she is. Like because Hillary isn't the foxiest thing out there, she is less of a valid politician?) I just can't be arsed, man.
At least Obama chose a wise running mate, one that would complement his admitted flaws (they say he's inexperienced? OK, Biden's got 30 years of experience! Especially in foreign policy.) Like, is nothing Obama does good enough for the Silent Majority? Yeesh.

I'm a proud non-voter. Or anti-voter, however you'd like to put it.
I'm not an anarchist - I believe that government should be present in a society to maintain it's stability. I'm neither conservative, liberal, or libertarian. I acknowledge the fact that if progress is to be made in a democratic society, the people have to make it happen - through voting or revolution or what have you.
I just choose to subtract myself from the process. The world doesn't need my opinion to rocket straight to Sheol. The world does what it does, for better or for worse, without my input. My conscience remains clear.
Am I ruining the democratic process? Hardly. If everyone did as I did, then maybe. But I find that your average voter does a great job of destroying democracy on their own.
