I know it went multi-platinum. But how much?
I've searched around and have gotten a bunch of different answers.

RIAA Gold and Platinum status only applies to US sales (I think). Also each disc in a double CD is counted separately. So basing a sales number off multi-platinum status is sort of misleading.
In November 2003 Rolling Stone named it #487 of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, stating that it had sold 4,610,000 to date. If that information is correct, as I'm sure it was at the time, that would make MCIS 8X Platinum (4x for Dawn to Dusk and 4x for Twilight to Starlight). BTW, Rolling Stone lists Siamese Dream as #360 selling 4,579,000 making it 4X platinum.
Although that data is 4 years old, my guess is only 100,000 (at most) have been sold since then.

hmm, on billboard.com it says that it went 7x platinum by the end of 1996, it was the second most selling cd of the year behind a female singer, i forget who. so does anyone know the exact number

I think a $50 box set of singles that everyone already had selling a million copies is impressive. Songs like 1979 didn't drive the sales...people wanted the bsides. For a band...that's impressive
